St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (August 19, 2009) - After rain drenched Midway Stadium for most of the day, the outfielders had to navigate puddles in the outfield and the St. Paul Saints were most successful as they snapped their five game losing streak 6-4 on Wednesday night in front 5,075.
The Sioux Falls Canaries jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Cody Haerther drilled a two-run homer to right, his second of the season.
The Saints had the answer in the bottom of the inning as Josh Alley singled to center with one out. With two outs Jason Cooper walked and Jacob Butler followed with a two-run double to center, tying the game at two.
The Canaries made it 3-2 in the second as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Trevor Lawhorn walked and Patrick Reilly and J.D. Reininger followed with back-to-back singles. After Ken Lup popped out, Joe Anthonsen hit a grounder to short, but Steve Butler couldn't field it cleanly and that allowed Lawhorn to score. Saints starter Mark Moriarty, however, was able to get Tim Hutting to pop out and Haerther to strike out to limit the damage.
The Saints used that momentum in the bottom of the second to tie the game as Andrew Schmiesing led off with his seventh triple of the season. Scott Knazek scored him with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Saints got a great relief appearance from Reed Dickert who took over for Moriarty with runners at first and second and nobody out in the fifth. He got Corey Harris to ground into a fielder's choice erasing the runner at second and putting runners at the corners. Dickert then struck out the next two hitters to end the inning. He went 3.0 shutout innings allowing three hits while walking one and striking out four.
The Saints took their first lead of the night in the fifth as Cooper walked and scored on Jacob Butler's second double of the night. He finished the evening 3-3 with two doubles and three RBI.
The Saints got some breathing room in the sixth as Schmiesing doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Knazek and scored on Steve Butler's single to center to make it 5-3. Alex Fonseca moved Butler to third on a single to left-center and Josh Alley's RBI groundout made it 6-3.
The Saints hung on from there, but not before a tough ninth inning. Mike Bille gave up a lead off double to Tim Hutting and then struck out Haerther. A wild pitch moved Hutting to third and he scored on an infield single by Torbert. Bille got Harris to fly out and then looked to end the game on a ground ball by Trevor Lawhorn, but shortstop Steve Butler couldn't field it cleanly. The lefty Ryan Ariail came out of the bullpen to face the left-hand hitting Patrick Reilly and he got him to fly out to left to end the game.
The Saints now trail the Lincoln Saltdogs by 3.0 games with 11 games remaining after the Saltdogs lost to the Grand Prairie AirHogs 5-4. The Saints play the final game of the three game series against the Canaries on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saint send RHP Tom Buske (3-5, 5.03) to the mound against Canaries RHP Noel Baca (3-4, 5.40). It is Baseball Musical Night. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
