EVERETT, Wash. - Forward Nikita Scherbak, who helped the Everett Silvertips capture the U.S. Division title in 2014-15, scored a goal on his first shot in his National Hockey League debut on Saturday with the Montreal Canadiens at Air Canada Centre, in a 5-3 victory against the host Toronto Maple Leafs.
Scherbak, 21, added a +1 rating and a blocked shot in 10:53 of ice time with the Canadiens. The 6-foot-2, 190 pound forward is the 17th player, all-time to suit up for the Silvertips and then skate in the NHL.
The native of Moscow, Russia was the Silvertips leading scorer in 2014-15, helping the franchise capture their fourth U.S. Division title. In 65 games, he established placement among Silvertips single season records with 82 points (4th), 55 assists (T-3), and a +33 rating (T-3). Scherbak was also second in Silvertips playoff scoring with 8 points in 11 postseason contests.
His hat trick on Nov. 5, 2014 against Red Deer was the 43rd all time in Silvertips history.
Scherbak was acquired from the Saskatoon Blades on Sept. 22, 2014 in exchange for goaltender Nik Amundrud, a first round selection in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft and a second round selection in 2016. Scherbak, who led all WHL rookies in points (78), assists (50) and goals (28) in 2013-14, was selected in the second round by Saskatoon in the 2013 CHL Import Draft.
Scherbak, suiting up in 75 games of American Hockey League experience with St. John's, was selected by Montreal in the first round (26th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
