Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland Winterhawks Vice President, General Manager and Head Coach Mike Johnston announced that defenseman Nick Cicek will be the 2020-21 team captain.
Cicek is entering his fourth season with the Winterhawks and he has played 119 games with the team to date. The Winnipeg, MB native has been a steady defenseman for Portland throughout his Western Hockey League career and last season, he set career highs in goals and points. Reliable on the backend, Cicek's plus-30 rating last year ranked him fifth among WHL Western Conference defensemen.
Cicek was selected by the Winterhawks in the seventh round, 149th overall, of the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. He will now proudly wear the "C" during his final year of WHL eligibility.
Rounding out the leadership group, the Winterhawks also named Mason Mannek, Reece Newkirk, Seth Jarvis, and Jaydon Dureau as their four alternate captains for the 2020-21 season. This is the second season forwards Mannek and Newkirk will don the "A" on their jersey.
Cicek becomes the 45th captain in team history, joining the likes of former captains Brent Peterson, Adam Deadmarsh, Brenden Morrow, and Paul Gaustad as well as recent captains Johnny Ludvig, Cody Glass, Keoni Texiera, Keegan Iverson, Dominic Turgeon, and Nic Petan. Nick Cicek takes over the captaincy position from Johnny Ludvig, who was with the Winterhawks for three seasons and is now playing for the Syracuse Crunch.
Fans can watch all of Portland's games for the 2020-21 regular season on the newly launched WHL Live on CHL TV. Every game will be streamed live from the arena direct to your computer and smart devices, all in HD. Winterhawks' Season Ticket Holders and Plan Members should check their email inboxes for special streaming package options that will allow them to safely watch the Winterhawks all season long.
