Bilous Backstops Warriors to Shootout Win

Goaltender Boston Bilous was a wall for the Warriors in the Moose Jaw net Sunday night as they improved their Subway WHL Hub record to 2-0 with a 2-1 shootout win over the Prince Albert Raiders.

Prince Albert came out of the gates hard and had a consistent attack inside the Moose Jaw zone.

The bulk of the Raiders' opportunities came on a 5-on-3 powerplay three and a half minutes into the game.  Moose Jaw was successful in killing off the 96 second Prince Albert two-man advantage to keep the game scoreless.

The Warriors started to find their stride after coming off a powerplay of their own where they had plenty of attack time and pressure on the Raiders net.  However, neither team was able to put the puck over the goal line and went into the first intermission scoreless.

Room to maneuver was hard to come by throughout the second period for the Warriors, however, they were able to fight to create several quality scoring chances but unfortunately, they were unable to convert.

On the other side, the Raiders took a 1-0 lead at 8:22 when they fought the puck away from the Warriors on the Moose Jaw boards and eventually set up Kaiden Guhle for a shot inside the left circle that beat Boston Bilous.

When the third period opened, the Warriors came hard at the Prince Albert net.  Four minutes into the frame, 17-year-old rookie Atley Calvert fought the puck away from the Raiders and moved it to Daemon Hunt at the blueline.

The Warriors Captain stepped off the line and stepped into a slapshot, blasting the puck past goalie Carter Serhyenko, tying the game at one.

Moose Jaw kept coming for the rest of the third period but was not able to notch a game-winner.

In overtime, the Warriors were aggressive and outshot the Raiders 5-1 in the extra period but they were not able to finish the game.

In the Subway WHL Hub's first shootout, the Raiders opened the first round with a goal from Ozzy Wiesblatt.  However, the Warriors countered with Ryder Korczak, who converted on his chance to tie the shootout at one.

Second-round shooters Eric Alarie and Matthew Culling were both stopped.  The third round opened with the Raiders Spencer Moe, who was stopped by Boston Bilous.

With the game on the line, Head Coach Mark O'Leary sent 15-year-old 2020 1st round pick Brayden Yager over the boards.

Yager came broke in on the Raiders net and then snapped a shot under the crossbar, beating Serhyenko, and giving the Warriors a 2-1 win.

Bilous finished with 27 saves in regulation and overtime and another two in the shootout, while on the other side, Carter Serhyenko made 24 saves.

Moose Jaw was 0-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Warriors will now wait until Tuesday to return to action when they renew their long rivalry with the Regina Pats.  Coverage from the Subway WHL Hub begins at 7:40 pm on Country 100.
