Memphis Hustle News Release

Nic Thornton, a senior swimmer at Hernando High School in Hernando, has been named the Hustle High School Athlete of the Month, presented by Campbell Clinic, for the month of January. Thornton was recognized at the game on Saturday, January 12 against the Texas Legends.

Thornton won the State Championship in both the 50 Yard Freestyle and the 100 Yard Freestyle in Tupelo back on October 27. His two titles helped Hernando High finish in fifth place. Additionally, he won the championship in the same events at the DeSoto County MHSAA Class II North Half Finals in Cleveland on October 21.

While Nic also took home bronze in both his freshman and sophomore years, his favorite accomplishment is easy for him to pick. "It'd have to be the two gold medals I won my senior year," said Thornton.

Thornton has signed a scholarship to continue his swimming career at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Missouri, where he intends to major in mechanical engineering and could possibly double-major. Nic has excelled in the classroom, touting a 4.0 grade-point average in three of his four years in high school and earning only one B during his education. Thornton also scored a 29 on his ACT.

Outside of swimming, Nic has been involved with the Hernando Mayor's Youth Council. The youth council helps develop leadership skills by taking an active role in city sponsored activities, volunteerism and youth lead initiatives that seek to engage with the community.
