South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC- The South Carolina Stingrays, celebrating 23 seasons in the Lowcountry and proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL), have added goaltender Vitek Vanecek to the Training Camp Roster.
Vanecek, 19, was selected by Washington Capitals in the second round, 39th overall, in the 2014 NHL Draft. A native of Havlickuv Brod, Czech Republic, Vanecek was assigned to the Stingrays by the club's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Hershey Bears. He participated in both Washington and Hershey's Training Camp.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound goaltender has various international experience, skating with the Czech Republic's U20 team last season.
Vanecek will make the transition to North America for his first professional season this year. The Stingrays have often worked with Washington goaltending prospects, including Braden Holtby and Philipp Grubauer, both Stingrays alumni who are on the Capitals roster.
The Stingrays open preseason action Friday, October 9 as they host the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at the Carolina Ice Palace at 7:05 p.m. The game is free, but due to limited seating, only open to Season Ticket Holders. The club also plays at the Carolina Ice Palace on Saturday against the Atlanta Gladiators at 7:05 p.m.
