The Syracuse Chiefs won the first game of a 10-game homestand, 8-1, against the Toledo Mud Hens at NBT Bank Stadium. Taylor Jordan hurled seven strong innings for Syracuse, while new Chiefs Kevin Keyes and Rick Hague combined to drive in four runs on Monday night.

Syracuse (21-44) jumped out early and often against Toledo. The Chiefs scored five runs in the bottom of the first against Mud Hens starter Tim Melville. Tony Gwynn Jr. walked with one out but was forced out at second on a Jason Martinson fielder's choice to the shortstop Dixon Machado. With Martinson on first, Keyes - making his Triple-A debut - chased him around with a double to right-center to give Syracuse its first run. Mario Lisson followed with an RBI single to left field to make it 2-0. The next batter, Caleb Ramsey drew a walk to put runners on first and second with two men out. In his first Triple-A at-bat, Hague launched a three-run home run just inside the foul pole down the right-field line. Hague's first home run since June 27, 2014 with Double-A Harrisburg gave the Chiefs a 5-0 advantage after the first inning.

Toledo (28-37) got on the board in the top of third inning against Taylor Jordan. With one out, Hague committed an error at second base on a ground ball by Corey Jones. Miguel Gonzalez advanced Jones to second with a chopper to second base. With two outs, Victor Martinez, in his second rehab game, lined an RBI single to left field to give the Mud Hens their first run of the game and make the score 5-1.

The Chiefs answered back in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Keyes doubled to the left-center field gap. The next batter, Lisson, lined a single up the middle to plate the sixth Syracuse run.

Syracuse scored one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to increase its lead over Toledo. With two outs in the sixth, Hague recorded his second hit of the game to give the Chiefs a base runner. Dan Butler lined a double into left field that deflected off the glove of Daniel Fields, which allowed Hague to score all the way from first to give Syracuse a 7-1 lead.

Lisson tallied his third RBI of the game to give Syracuse an 8-1 lead in the seventh against Guido Knudson. Jason Martinson singled with one out in the frame. Then, Keyes reached base on an error by the second baseman Jones to put runners on the corners with one out. Lisson followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Chiefs an 8-1 heading into the eighth.

Toledo tacked on two in the top of the eighth inning against Erik Davis. Two singles by Gonzalez and Martinez and a walk to Xavier Avery loaded the bases for the Mud Hens with no one out. Davis struck out the next two hitters in the inning. However, with two outs, Steven Moya singled to center to score two. Toledo trailed by five, 8-3, after seven and a half innings of play.

Syracuse takes on Toledo in game two of a three-game set on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium. The Chiefs throw right-hander Paolo Espino against right-hander Shane Greene.
