International League Names Players of the Week
Published on June 15, 2015 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Durham outfielder Corey Brown and Norfolk pitcher Chris Jones have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from June 8-14. Brown joins teammate Dylan Floro (April 9-12) to become the second Durham player to claim a weekly award in 2015, while Jones is the first member of the Norfolk Tides to be so honored this season. Brown is now a three-time winner of the IL Batter of the Week Award during his career, having garnered the same honor twice as a member of the Syracuse Chiefs (Aug. 1-7, 2011; May 21-27, 2012).
COREY BROWN, Durham Bulls IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Durham outfielder Corey Brown hit .370 over the past week while leading the International League with four home runs, nine runs scored, six extra-base hits, 24 total bases, and a .889 slugging percentage. Brown was also tied for 2nd in the League with 9 RBI for the week, five of which came in Tuesday's 7-4 Bulls victory over Lehigh Valley in which he went deep twice for the first time this season. Brown is now tied with teammate J.P. Arencibia atop the IL leader board with ten home runs during the 2015 campaign.
29-year-old Corey Brown is in his ninth season playing professionally and his first with the Tampa Bay organization after signing as a free agent last December. Brown was an International League All- Star in 2012 with Syracuse after hitting .285 with 25 homers and 71 RBI. He is a veteran of 39 games in the Major Leagues with the Nationals (2011-13) and Red Sox (2014). Brown is a native of Tampa, Florida.
CHRIS JONES, Norfolk Tides IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Lefty Chris Jones, used for much of his career as a relief pitcher, made his seventh start of the season Friday night against Lehigh Valley. He took a perfect game into the 6th inning and finished with just one single allowed over 7.0 shutout innings in Norfolk's 4-3 win. Jones retired the game's first 16 batters before Lehigh Valley's Gabriel Lino managed a one-out single in the 6th, just the third ball all evening that even reached the outfield against Jones. The effort dropped Jones' ERA on the season to 2.24, the second-lowest mark in the International League.
26-year-old Chris Jones is in his ninth season playing professionally and his third in the Baltimore organization after being traded from Atlanta in April, 2013. Last season Jones led the Norfolk club with eight victories and was 8th in the IL with a 3.61 ERA. He has yet to make his Major League debut. Jones is a native of Tampa, Florida.
