Norfolk used a big night from Michael Almanzar and two four-run innings to charge past the Columbus Clippers 9-5 Monday night at Harbor Park.

Trailing 4-0 entering the fourth, Norfolk needed just four batters to come to the plate to knot the score. Dariel Alvarez led off the frame with a solo homer to left, his team-leading eighth home run of the season. Christian Walker followed with a double before a Sean Halton single put runners at the corners, and Almanzar then lofted a fly ball just inside the left field foul pole for a three-run blast that tied the game at 4-4.

Norfolk claimed the lead in the sixth frame, as Almanzar grounded into a run-scoring double play to plate Walker and give the Tides a 5-4 advantage.

Columbus knotted the score with a run in the top of the eighth, but the Tides rallied back with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Almanzar had a bases loaded infield single to give the Tides the lead, a play in which Clippers reliever Giovanni Soto (2-1) threw wildly to first to allow another run to score. Three batters later Henry Urrutia grounded a single up the middle to plate two runs and extend Norfolk's advantage to 9-5.

Oliver Drake then worked a scoreless ninth to wrap up the series-opening victory.

Cesar Cabral (2-0) picked up the win in relief despite allowing his first run of the season. The 26-year-old left-hander now owns a 0.45 ERA (1 ER, 20.0 IP) in 22 relief outings with the Tides.

With the win, Norfolk has now alternated wins and losses over its first 13 games of June.

The two clubs continue their three-game set on Tuesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. Reigning IL Pitcher of the Week Chris Jones (2-4, 2.24) will get the start for Norfolk against right-hander Cody Anderson (1-0, 1.29).
