Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Former College of Charleston Cougar star and current New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner will make a rehab start on Friday, June 8th when the Charleston RiverDogs host the Savannah Sand Gnats at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. First pitch is slated for 7:05 pm.
Gardner is rehabbing a right elbow injury.
"Brett will play tomorrow (Friday) and possibly Saturday," said New York Yankees Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations Mark Newman "We are taking it one game at a time with him. His coming to Charleston is his first step toward getting back in left field in Yankee Stadium."
Major Leaguers that have had recent rehab pitching assignments in Charleston include Tim Hudson (Braves), Phil Hughes (Yankees), Carl Pavano (former Yankee; current Twin) and Jon Lester (Red Sox).
A native of Holly Hill, SC, Gardner played collegiately at the College of Charleston. A former walk-on, he turned himself into a three-year starter and was chosen to the 2004 All-Southern Conference Team. Following his junior year of college, Gardner was selected in the third round of the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft by the New York Yankees. He won a World Series with the Yankees in 2009, and tied for the American League lead in stolen bases in 2011.
