Hickory Crawdads News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - The Hickory Crawdads seized the lead in the first inning and never looked back en route to the 7-3 win against the Charleston RiverDogs before 4,676 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Thursday night.

The Crawdads (32-27) took the early lead with two tallies in the top of the first against RHP Bryan Mitchell (L, 4-4). SS Luis Sardinas led off the game with a single, before moving to second when 3B Drew Robinson worked a walk. DH Hanser Alberto reached with a base hit to load the bases, though Mitchell did get RF Zach Cone to pop out for the first out in the frame. However, LF Jeremy Williams brought Sardinas in from third with an infield single to short, which led to a throwing error on the play that scored Robinson for the 2-0 lead.

Hickory tacked on three more tallies in the top of the fourth frame. C Kellin Deglan started the inning with a solo home run over the right field fence. The 'Dads got a man right on base after the bomb, as CF Jordan Akins was hit by a pitch. He then raced all the way home on an RBI double by 2B Alejandro Selen. Selen advanced to third base on a 1B Trever Adams single, and then scored on a SS Luis Sardinas grounder right in front of the plate, making it 5-0.

After four scoreless frames from RHP Luke Jackson (W, 5-4) to start his outing, the RiverDogs (36-23) got on the board against him in the bottom of the fifth. CF Mason Williams led off with a single and swiped second base. After a grounder moved Williams to third, he darted home on an RBI sacrifice fly by RF Tyler Austin, cutting it to a 5-1 deficit.

The 'Dads stretched the lead right back out with runs in the top of the sixth and top of the seventh. Alberto drove in Sardinas with an RBI single in the sixth, before Williams started the seventh with a double. A pair of wild pitches from RHP Brett Gerritse throughout the inning worked Williams in from second, putting Hickory ahead, 7-1.

All-Star RHP Phil Klein tossed the scoreless sixth inning for the 'Dads before giving way to LHP Kevin Matthews to start the seventh. Charleston picked up runs in the seventh and ninth against Matthews, but he was able to keep the 'Dads in front through his three-inning outing, closing the 7-3 Hickory win.
