Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Despite only scoring five runs in their three-game series with the Northern Division-leading Greensboro Grasshoppers, the Augusta GreenJackets managed to earn a series sweep with a 2-0 win on Thursday night in front of 4,307 at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Kyle Crick led the way with seven scoreless innings of one-hit ball for Augusta.
Ben Thomas led a 12-hit GreenJackets offensive attack - one shy of their single-game high number of hits this season. Thomas drilled three hits, his first two giving the GreenJackets the lead. His fourth inning double - the game's lone extra base hit - plated a run to make it a 1-0 game. In the sixth, Thomas delivered an RBI single into shallow right-center to double Augusta's lead to 2-0.
Crick (2-4) was masterful in his first home win of the season, holding the Grasshoppers to one hit and a walk over seven scoreless innings - retiring 21 of the 23 hitters he faced. His ten strikeouts set a new career-best for Crick, making him the third Augusta starting pitcher to strike out ten or more in a single game this season.
The GreenJackets stranded just seven men on base despite the 12 hits and two walks they drew. A double play wiped one potential threat off the bases in the second while the GreenJackets had four runners caught stealing at various points in the contest.
Kyle Vazquez came on in the ninth and allowed a leadoff single, before getting three straight outs to seal his second save of the year - both in this series. Vazquez struck out league-leading hitter Brent Keys on a called third strike to preserve Augusta's second shutout of the series and sixth this season.
Josh Hodges (4-3) took the loss for Greensboro, scattering two runs on ten hits and a walk in six innings while striking out five.
The GreenJackets look to make it four straight wins as they head for Rome on Friday to open a three-game weekend series with the Braves. Kevin Couture (2-4, 3.65) will get the ball for the GreenJackets in the opener against All-Star Navery Moore (3-2, 3.25), who has two wins against Augusta this season. Atlanta Brave Chipper Jones is currently scheduled to rehab for the Rome Braves in Rome on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch from Rome comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Monday to return the favor against the Braves, hosting Rome in the opener of a three-game set at 7:05 p.m. Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
