Notes From the Dragons Lair
FLORIDA CONNECTIONS:
WR/LB Sir Mawn Wilson is from Tampa Bay, FL, while OL/DL Tyronn Johnson attended college at Florida A&M. Predators FB/LB Idris Price spent time on the New York Jets practice squad during the 2002 NFL season.
CHAMPS OF THE BIG EAST:
For the third consecutive season, the Dragons are the champions of the Eastern Division. And rightfully so. This season, the Dragons swept all of their Eastern foes with a perfect 6-0 record in divisional play.
DRAGONS SET NEW RETURN RECORD:
The Dragons set a new AFL record this season for combined kick returns for touchdowns with twelve. The record was broken when WR/LB Chris Anthony returned an onsides kick for a score in a Week Fifteen victory over Columbus. WR/DB Will Holder finished the regular season ranked third in the AFL in combined kick returns for touchdowns with five, while WR/DB Corey Johnson finished fourth with three. WR/DB DaShane Dennis had two for the season while OS Markeith Cooper and WR/LB Chris Anthony each had one. As a team, the Dragons lead the league in this category with a total of twelve.

COLISEUM MADNESS:
For the second consecutive season the Dragons set a new single-game franchise attendance record. The organization started off the 2005 season on February 6, 2005 with a packed house of 14,925, which is the complete Arena Football capacity for the Nassau Coliseum. In the eight regular season home games, the Dragons broke their attendance figure for a single season with 95,912 fans passing through the turnstiles.
The Dragons are also 7-1 on their own turf this season, which was the third best home record in the league.
BILLY'S NOT A KID ANYMORE:
Rookie DS Billy Parker is not only making a big name for himself in the AFL, but he made a strong case for Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors during the regular season. He finished the regular season leading the league in interceptions with ten, three more then the next highest player. For his efforts in his rookie campaign, he was named to the 2005 All-Rookie team. In Week Seventeen he tied the franchise record for interceptions, which was originally set by DS Kevin Kaesviharn in 2000. He also led all rookies and finished seventh overall in the league in tackles with 90.0 and tied for third in passes defensed with 21. Parker won ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors on six different occasions and won the ADT Defensive Player of the Week honor in Week 17.

THE 700 CLUB:
QB Aaron Garcia threw five touchdown passes in Week Fourteen at Dallas to become the first player in professional football history to record 700-or-more career passing touchdowns. The score came on a 37-yard toss to OS Kevin Swayne in the first quarter. Garcia now has 725 touchdowns in his illustrious career. New Orleans' QB Andy Kelly joined the 700 Club in Week Fifteen.
GARCIA FIRST IN TD'S, SECOND IN COMPLETIONS AND YARDS:
Dragons QB Aaron Garcia is in his 11th AFL season and remains one of the league's top passers. He also remains first all-time with 725 touchdowns and is second in all-time passing yards with 34,657 and in completions with 2,941.
The All-Arena QB became the first player to reach the 700 touchdown plateau in the Dragons' victory over the Dallas Desperados on April 29.

TOUCHDOWN MACHINE:
Just because QB Aaron Garcia is getting older it doesn't mean he's slowing down. Going back to the 2004 season, Garcia has thrown the second highest amount of the touchdowns in the AFL with 181. He trails only Philadelphia Soul QB Tony Graziani, who has 189 over the past two seasons.

HIGH RATINGS:
QB Aaron Garcia quietly had standout regular season in 2005. He finished as the second highest rated quarterback in the AFL with a QB Rating of 120.4. For the season, he completed 375 of 547 passes for a 68.6 completion percentage.
THE WINNING EDGE:
The Third Quarter: For the Dragons, taking a lead into the third quarter is one of three keys to victory. Through the completion of the regular season, the Dragons are 8-1 when leading after the third quarter and are 0-5 when trailing. When tied after the third, the Dragons are 2-0.
50-Points: The second key to a Dragons' victory in 2005 is scoring 50 points. The team has scored at least 51 points in each of their ten wins, including five games of 60-plus points.
Turnovers: The third key to a Dragons' victory is the turnover margin. When the team has a plus or even turnover margin against their opponents, their record is 9-2 compared to 1-4 when it's a negative margin.
SWAYNE'S PERFECT RECORD:
The Dragons have a perfect 6-0 record in games that OS Kevin Swayne has played in. Swayne missed the first two games of the season with a hamstring injury, six games in the middle of the season with a separated shoulder and the last two games with a slightly strained hamstring.
"ZEUS" IS RUNNING STRONG:
Second year FB/LB Josh "Zeus" White ran through the AFL in the regular season. He finished fourth in the league in rushing scores with 12 and fifth in yards with 180. He had five games where he had two rushing scores.
DRAGONS TOOK, BUT DIDN'T GIVE:
The Dragons' offense didn't turn the ball over much in the regular season and the defense forced 31 turnovers. That makes for a Fire Breathin' combination in terms of the giveaway-takeaway differential. The Dragons finished the regular season tied for second in the league with a plus-eight ratio, 31 to 23.

AN ANGEL IN THE BACKFIELD:
DS Chris Angel isn't letting too many receivers get past him in the backfield. The second year veteran finished the regular season fourth in the league with 100.5 tackles, 87 of which were solo, and tied for tenth with fifteen passes defended. Both his tackles and solo tackles totals are new Dragons records.
QUARTERBACKS GETTING BURNED:
The Dragons' defense was outstanding in the 2005 regular season. They finished leading the league in team interceptions with 28 and they were just one shy of tying the AFL record for interceptions in a single season.
DS Billy Parker led the league in interceptions with ten, while WR/DB Corey Johnson finished in a tie for second with seven. WR/DB Will Holder finished tied for 19th with four, while DS Chris Angel and WR/LB/OS Mike Horacek were tied for 37th with two each. WR/DB DaShane Dennis along with WR/LB Chris Anthony and FB/LB Josh "Zeus" White each had one.
KICKIN' IT:
The Dragons know K Rob Bironas has a strong leg and it paid off. He finished the regular season second in the league with 52 touchbacks, setting a new franchise record.
ARENA-BRED COACHES:
The Dragons are one of two teams in the league to have their entire coaching staff comprised of former AFL players. They share the distinction with the Philadelphia Soul. In total, the Dragons' coaching staff has a combined 22 years of AFL playing experience and another combined 14-plus years as coaches.
LIVING YOUNG:
In the off-season the Dragons hired a defensive-minded head coach, who also happens to be the youngest in professional football. Weylan Harding entered the 2005 season at 33 years old, 23 months and four days younger than the second-youngest head coach â New Orleans's Mike Neu. However, Harding does not hold the distinction of being the youngest coach in league history. That honor goes to Kevin Guy of the 2000 New Jersey Red Dogs, who was 27 years old.

IRON DRAGONS:
Two Dragons were honored with the US Army Ironman of the Week award in 2005. WR/LB Mike Horacek was given the honor in Week Five in the Dragons' 61-36 victory over the Arizona Rattlers when he recorded five receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns. However, his biggest contribution came on defense when he intercepted a fourth quarter pass from Rattlers' QB Sherdrick Bonner and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown.
Two weeks later in Week Seven, WR/DB Corey Johnson was honored with the award for his stellar play versus the Georgia Force. He had three touchdowns along with an interception and played in every offensive and defensive series. Johnson returned two kicks for scores from 55 and 57 yards, respectively, and caught another for a total of three. He was also a playmaker defensively, by recording 4.0 tackles with one interception. He finished with game-high 258 total yards.
DEFENSE GOT IT DONE VS. ARIZONA:
The Dragons' defense tied an AFL record in their game versus the Arizona Rattlers by recording six interceptions. WR/DB Corey Johnson hauled in a pair in the first half while DS Chris Angel, WR/LB Mike Horacek, DS Billy Parker and FB/LB Josh White all added one a piece. The defense recorded eight defensive stops including a turnover on downs on the Rattlers' first drive of the game.
ORIGINAL DRAGONS:
FB/LB Chin Achebe and QB Aaron Garcia are New York Dragons through thick and thin. The duo consists of the only two that have played with the team for each of its first five seasons on Long Island. Both Achebe and Garcia made the move when the Iowa Barnstormers relocated to New York prior to the 2001 season.
Achebe has spent each of his six AFL seasons with the franchise as he made his league debut as a Barnstormer in 2000. Garcia was traded to Iowa from New Jersey on June 2, 1998 for WR/DB Chris Spencer and OL/DL John Dixon. This is Garcia's 11th AFL season and eighth with the franchise.
OS Kevin Swayne has been the property of the Dragons for all five seasons, however he spent two seasons on the exempt list from 2002-2004. After a successful 2001 campaign, he was signed by the NFL's New York Jets and stayed there for three seasons. He returned to the Dragons mid-way through the 2004 season. Swayne also suited up for the Barnstormers from 1998-1999.
WR/LB Mike Horacek is the only other player to have played for both the Barnstormers and the Dragons. From 1997 to 2000, Horacek split time as a WR/DB and an OS with Iowa. He was the AFL's Offensive Player of the Year in 2000, his last with the team until he was selected in 2004 Dispersal Draft. The 2005 season is his first with the Dragons, but fifth with the franchise.
WR/DB Todd Doxzon was also a member of the 2001 Dragons. He spent three seasons with the Dragons from 2001 to 2003 before leaving via free
agency in 2004. The veteran Ironman resigned with the Dragons on April 19.
Players to Watch
THREE FIRE BREATHIN' DRAGONS:
QB Aaron Garcia: One of the most prolific passers in the history of the AFL always gives his team a chance to win. He finished the regular season throwing seven touchdowns in each of the last three games.
DS Bill Parker: The rookie out of William & Mary had one the best seasons for a first year defensive player in AFL history. He finished the regular season with a league-leading ten interceptions on the season and is a strong candidate for several post-season award honors.
OL/DL Marcus "Snowball" Owen: The Lineman of the Year candidate hasn't given up a sack since Week Two. And through the entire season, The Longest Yard star has only given up two sacks, both in Week Three.
Inside the Headset
Every Monday, Dragons head coach Weylan Harding lets the fans get inside his headset in an open question and answer forum. Here's this week's journal.
How does it feel to be one of the youngest head coaches to win their division in their first season?
Harding: I know I may sound like a broken record, but I truly have not given any thought to this or any of the accomplishments thus far. We're in the midst of our playoff run and our continued progress towards the ArenaBowl is the only thing that warrants my attention. I will reflect on everything when it is over.
Coach, what did you learn from your first game against Orlando earlier in the season that you can use for the playoff game?
Harding: I have learned that any team can be dangerous despite their injury situation and we must prepare for any scenario that may arise during the course of the game. Orlando, like us, has heart and they continue to fight through adversity. So we have to match their effort at all times.
Coach, what's going to be different as your prepare for your first playoff game this week?
Harding: We will prepare for this game no differently then the others. My staff has worked hard and long to prepare the team for each and every game all season. Our effort will not change.
Coach, what's the message you're going to send to your team this week?
Harding: Take advantage of your opportunity. Let it all hang out from beginning to end. Live in the moment and let your passion fuel you. We are one family with one love and one goal.
Coach, are you happy with the type of effort you received from your team last week as they head into the playoffs?
Harding: I am pleased with the fact they played for each other in a way that strengthens their bonds. They played hard from start to finish and did not take their position for granted. We have truly become a team.
