New York Dragons and Five af2 Clubs to Hold Local Workout

January 29, 2009 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
New York Dragons News Release

Uniondale, N.Y. - During the New York Dragons and the AFL's hiatus for the 2009 season, the team has joined forces with several Arena Football 2 teams to host an open workout on February 28 for local football players interested in earning a spot on an AF2 team.

The AF2 league is considered a developmental league for the AFL. With 25 teams in locations spanning the U.S, - from Amarillo, Tex. to Green Bay, Wis. to Albany, N.Y. - the AF2 is one of the best resources for AFL coaches and general managers when looking to fill spots on their roster.

Dragons Head Coach Weylan Harding has partnered with the coaching staff of the Albany Firebirds, the Green Bay Blizzard, the Peoria Pirates, the Central Valley Coyotes and the Lexington Horsemen to host the Arena Football workout in February. The Dragons coaching staff will run the workout and disseminate information and feedback on each player to the participating AF2 clubs.

"This is a great way for teams outside of the New York area to get a glimpse at some of the local talent we have here as well as for local players to get a chance they might not have to play on an AF2 team outside of the area," Coach Harding said.

Harding views this as an opportunity for players to further their careers during the suspended 2009 season as well as an opportunity for the Dragons to find talent for 2010 and track players as they progress through the AF2.

The Dragons have held several successful open tryouts in the past with an average of 100 participants each. Current Dragon and All-Arena DB Billy Parker made the team as a result of his attendance and performance at an open tryout. Former Dragons WR Chris Anthony and DB Will Holder were also discovered out of open tryouts.

The open workout will take place on February 28 from 6:30am to 11:30am at Mitchell Field in Uniondale, N.Y. The fee to workout will be $50 in advance and $75 at the door. To register in advance, please call or email Edwin Vincent at 516-282-7373 or Edwin.vincent@newyorkdragons.com.

The workout will take place on an Astroturf field and players will be responsible for their own equipment and hydration needs. The workout will consist of several different non-contact drills. The team will not be trying out Kickers at this time.
