Bangor Lumberjacks News Release

Bangor, ME- The Bangor Lumberjacks, a proud member of the Northeast League announced today that they have signed LHP Ben Fox and INF/OF Dave Martinez to contracts. To make room on the roster, the Lumberjacks released RHP John Parker.

Fox is a former 10th round selection of the San Diego Padres and split his rookie season of 2001 between rookie affiliate Idaho Falls and Single-A Fort Wayne. As the Idaho Falls Padres closer, Fox went 1-1 with five saves and 17 strikeouts in 16.0 innings before being promoted to Fort Wayne. Fox appeared in 11 games, starting five and posted a 1-1 record with a 7.48 ERA, fanning 22 in 27.2 innings.

The next season, the Las Vegas native was used as a spot starter and compiled a 4-4 record with a 3.91 ERA in 39 games, three starts. In 78.0 innings, he struck out 48 and walked 29. Fox graduated from Dixie Junior College in Utah in 2001 before being drafted.

"Ben put up really good numbers in the Midwest League and then got hurt, so he didn't play last year, but he's healthy now and I expect him to come in and hold hitters at bay," said Lumberjacks manager Kash Beauchamp.

The Jacks also signed utility man Dave Martinez. A switch-hitter, Martinez can play every position except pitcher. The rookie spent limited time with the San Angelo (TX) Colts of the Central League earlier this season. In his first game as a Lumberjack, Martinez set a league record by being hit by a pitch three times.

"Dave is a guy who can be very valuable especially on our roster with his versatility. I saw him in the Central League tryout camp where he was drafted by San Angelo, and I liked him then," Beauchamp said. "The big thing is that he can catch."

Parker was used sparingly and was 0-0 with a 4.35 ERA in 10.1 innings pitched.

Wednesday is the Lumberjacks Christmas in July sponsored by Brewer Wal-Mart Supercenter. The Lumberjacks players will be wearing special Christmas themed jerseys for their game against the Cutters, which begins at 6:30. A silent auction will be held during the game where fans can bid to take home the jerseys after the game, which will be autographed by the players. Proceeds will benefit Golden Moments, a non-profit group that trains seeing-eye dogs for the blind. Golden Moments will be finishing a walk-a-thon at the ballpark prior to the game and one of the seeing-eye dogs will be "running" out the first pitch. Fans are encouraged to bring dog food to the game to receive a 2 for 1 deal on reserved tickets. For tickets, call (207) 947-1900, stop in the Lumberjacks Pro Shop in the Bangor Mall, or visit the Jacks website at www.bangorlumberjacks.com.
