Maria Conlon Teams Up With Cutters; Hometown UCONN Player To Be Honored July 31st

West Haven, CT- The New Haven County Cutters are holding a Maria Conlon Night at Yale Field on Saturday, July 31st.

The former UCONN Huskies guard Maria Conlon will be honored in front of her hometown fans during the Saturday night's Cutters Game. The Derby, CT., native will throw out the first pitch and sign autographs for fans. A donation in Maria Conlonfs name will be donated to the 'Boys and Girls Club of Lower Naugatuck Valley.'

Throughout her basketball career, the 5-9 guard from Derby has consistently found herself winning. In high school, Conlon's Seymour High squad went a combined 96-4 during her years as the team leader while she picked up a Gatorade State Player of the Year award, was awarded two Connecticut State Championship MVP crowns, and was named the New Haven Register Player of the Year after her senior season. She owns state records in a season (86) and for a career (246). Conlonfs play was so impressive that she attracted the attentions of UConn head coach Geno Auriemma and earned a scholarship to play for the perennial contender.

Once with the Huskies, Conlon found limited playing time early in her freshman season due to the presence of 2001 Nation Player of the Year Sue Bird at the Point Guard position, but managed to play in 23 games. She averaged 3.6 points per game for a team that would end up in the Final Four, including an impressive 19 for 45 from three point range.

In the 2001-2002 season, Conlon played in all of the Huskies' 39 games and in sync with her winning nature UConn finished the year 39-0 and National Champions. Her sophomore year also marked the occasions of Conlon's first colligate start, scoring seven points and adding four assists versus Rhode Island. Over the course of the season, Conlon increased her averages to 4.1 points per game and 1.8 assists per game and began to show her true potential as an asset to a powerful Connecticut team.

The 2002-2003 campaign proved to be a success for both Conlon and the Huskies. Conlon again started in 29 of the 38 contests, as UConn repeated as National Champions with a victory over Tennessee in the final. Scoring in double digits 10 times, Conlon averaged 6.9 points per game and was second on the team in assists with 3.4 per game. In the title game, Conlon came through for the Huskies with 11 points, six assists, four rebounds, and two steals in a team high 39 minutes versus the Lady Vols. She also showcased her three point shooting abilities against the UConn archrival, going 3 for 5 from behind the arch in the 73-68 Connecticut victory.

On May 4, 2003, Conlon was honored with gMaria Conlon Dayh in her hometown of Derby. In a celebration held on the town green, the UConn guard was praised by former coaches Charlie Stochmal, Joe Frager, and Eric DeMarco, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, State Senator Joe Crisco, and State Representative Cin Tonucci.

Conlonfs senior season in 2003-2004 brought a result she had become accustomed to: a championship. Her Huskies posted a 31-4 record as they again defeated Tennessee in the title game, this time by a score of 70-61. Conlon started 34 of 35 games for the champs, averaging 5.9 points per game. 2.9 assists per game, and 2.9 rebounds per game. Having won three championships in her four years at UConn, Conlon graduated a communication science major in 2004 with Connecticut boasting an astounding record of 139-8 during her time with the program, including a 70 game win streak in which Conlon was one of only two players to appear in every game.
