New Mexico United News Release
SCOTTSDALE, AZ (March 16, 2018) New Mexico United took the field, recently renamed Casino Arizona Field, against the defending western conference champions, Phoenix Rising FC. Both teams would walk away with a point, after a thrilling 3-3 draw.
United struck first in the 16th minute when Santi Moar, fed by Ryan Williams, curled one past Phoenix Goalkeeper, Carl Woszczynski. The referee awarded Phoenix Rising a penalty in the 29th minute, and Solomon Asante placed it in the bottom right corner of the net to equalize, but just a few seconds later, Kevaughn Frater blasted a left-footed shot, off of a David Estrada assist, to put United back on top.
Just three minutes into the second half, Phoenix was awarded their second penalty, and Solomon Asante made good on it again, bringing the score to 2-2. In the 55th minute, Rashid Tetteh put the ball at the feet of Santi Moar, and the Spaniard slotted his second goal of the evening, putting United on top 3-2. Jason Johnson of Phoenix equalized in the 71st minute, heading home a Junior Flemmings' cross, and that would be it for goals.
The ref's yellow card showed up often. NM United's David Estrada, Cody Mizell, Santi Moar, Ryan Williams, Kevaughn Frater and Justin Schmidt all found their way into the book, alongside Phoenix's Javier Perez, Adam Jahn, and Solomon Asante.
Phoenix controlled 58% of possession, but struggled against the United press that caused 14 interceptions. Both squads passed accurately (PHX: 82%: NM 74%) and Cody Mizell had 5 saves to Woszczynski's 3.
Man of the Match
Santi Moar put 4 shots on target, and 2 of them found the back of the net. He completed 85% of his passes, 76% in Phoenix's half, and hustled back on defense to intercept 4 balls.
