Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 1/10/09 - The Amarillo Gorillas dropped their third consecutive game at the Amarillo Civic Center Saturday night, with the New Mexico Scorpions pulling away 6-2.
Jake Morissette got the scoring started early for Amarillo, putting his team up 1-0 after a power play tally on a feed from Jon Ornelas at the 7:35 mark of the first. New Mexico responded quickly with a Michael Beynon tally under three minutes later, tying the score at one mid-way through the opening twenty minutes. The Scorpions would take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission, though, following an Aaron MacInnis goal with 1:01 remaining until the break.
Amarillo made good on the 1:40 of power play time carried over into the second period, as Sam Ftorek netted his 12th goal of the season off a Nick Theriault rebound to knot up the game at two. So the score would remain, until (with 2:37 left in the frame) Torren Delforte wristed a shot past the blocker of Gorillas' netminder Mike Gorman to put the Scorpions up once more heading into the second intermission.
The first nine minutes of the third period were scoreless, as Amarillo fought to tie the game. New Mexico received a much-needed insurance marker off the stick of Craig MacDonald near the halfway point of the final 20 minutes, giving them a 4-2 lead. The visitors would build on the lead with tallies from Delforte and Neil Trimm down the stretch, solidifying their eventual 6-2 victory.
Scorpions goaltender Andrew Martin stopped 36 of 38 Gorillas shots in the New Mexico win, while Amarillo (10-22-0) fell to 5-12-0 at the Civic Center this season.
The two teams will face off once again Sunday at the Civic Center with an afternoon start time of 4:05 PM. The game will be the last Amarillo home game for the next twelve days, as they embark on a road trip following the contest. Tickets for the game are available by calling (806) 242-PUCK (7825) or by visiting the Gorillas' ticketing office at 901 S. Buchanan in Amarillo.
