June 1, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Harrisburg Senators News Release
Monday night in front of 1,921 fans at Metro Bank Park, the Senators received one of their best pitching efforts of the season but still fell 2-1. Carlos Martinez started and went seven strong innings for the Senators, striking out 11 batters while allowing just three hits, but he left the game with the Senators trailing 2-0.
New Hampshire scored both of their runs in the third on an error, bloop single, walk, followed by a two-run single to center field off the bat of Adam Calderone.
Meanwhile, the Sens couldn't muster anything offensively. In the first, Edgardo Baez tripled with two outs but that was followed by a strikeout. In the fifth, a lead off walk was followed by a double-play and in the 6th, the Sens put two on with two out, but nothing came of it.
The best chances for the Sens came in their final two at bats. In the 8th inning, Bill Rhinehart doubled leading off the inning but that was followed by a strikeout, groundout and strikeout.
In the 9th, trailing 2-0, the Sens received a lead-off walk, followed by a single to right by Leonard Davis. After Matt Whitney sacrificed the runners to 2nd and 3rd, Marvin Lowrance grounded out to drive in a run and then Luke Montz flied out to deep right center field to end the game.
The Senators outhit New Hampshire 5-4, but again didn't produce with runners in scoring position.
Rey Gonzalez started and was the winner for New Hampshire. He was outstanding in his own right, going eight innings and allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out six.
The two teams continue their four-game series on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
