Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the week ending May 31st:

Portland Sea Dogs outfielder Aaron bates has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending May 31st. The 25-year old had an outstanding week for the Sea Dogs, hitting .464 (13-for-28) with three home runs, nine RBI, eight runs scored, two walks and a .786 slugging percentage in seven games. Bates, who is a native of Manhattan, New York, reached base in all seven games he played in last week and had five multiple hit games, including going 4-for-4 with two home runs, four RBI and four runs scored in a 10-5 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Thursday afternoon. The 6'4", 232 lb. slugger drove in 28 runs during the month of May, which ties a franchise record that is also held by Kevin Millar and Ross Gload. Aaron has been one of the top hitters in the league this season and is currently ranked among the league leaders in hits (62-1st), runs scored (35-2nd), batting average (.348-2nd), RBI (35-5th), total bases (94-tied 5th), OPS (.943-6th), on-base percentage (.415-8th), slugging percentage (.528-8th) and home runs (7-tied 9th). Bates, who was also named the Eastern League Player of the Week earlier this season for the week ending May 10th, was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 3rd round of the 2006 draft out of North Carolina State University.

Zach McAllister, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Trenton Thunder, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 31st. The 6'6", 230 lb. hurler made a pair of starts for the Thunder last week and was 2-0 with 15 strikeouts and a 0.66 ERA in 13.2 innings pitched. The 21-year old made his first appearance of the week last Tuesday evening at New Britain and pitched seven shutout innings to earn the victory in Trenton's 11-0 win. He gave up just four hits and two walks while striking out five New Britain batters in the victory. The Chillicothe, Illinois native also earned a win in his second start of the week, giving up one run on five hits and three walks while striking out 10 batters in 6.2 innings of work in a 4-1 win over the Altoona Curve at Waterfront Park on Sunday afternoon. McAllister has a record of 4-2 in nine starts for the Thunder this season and is currently ranked third in the league in ERA (1.84) and tied for sixth in WHIP (1.12). Zach, who combined to post a record of 14-9 with 115 strikeouts and a 2.09 ERA in 151 innings of work in 25 games last season for the Charleston RiverDogs and the Tampa Yankees, was selected by the New York Yankees in the 3rd round of the 2006 draft out of Illinois Valley Central High School.
