(Trenton, NJ)- Thunder Starting Pitcher Josh Schmidt tossed five shutout innings in his first start of the season to lift the Thunder to a 2-0 win over Bowie on Monday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton now has a four-game winning streak, which is its longest of the season. With the win, Trenton moved within one game of first place in the Northern Division Standings behind the Connecticut Defenders. Trenton has not been this close to first place in the Northern Division since April 28th.
Trenton (26-22) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off of Bowie Starting Pitcher John Mariotti (0-3). The Thunder loaded the bases with two outs in the frame. Left fielder James Cooper coaxed a walked on a full-count pitch to plate Designated Hitter Noah Hall to bring in the first run of the game. Marriotti walked three batters in the inning. Trenton added to the lead in the fourth inning. Hall reached second base on a one-out error by Bowie Second baseman Rodolfo Cardona. Trenton Catcher Kyle Anson followed with an RBI single to plate Hall to make it 2-0. Anson was the only Trenton hitter with a multi-hit game. He went 2 x 3. Cooper was 1 x 1 with an RBI and two walks.
Schmidt (4-1) tossed five shutout innings in a spot-start to pick up the win. He allowed only two hits, walked one, and struck out two. He retired the final nine batters he faced. It was the first start of his professional career. Thunder Reliever Michael Dunn followed with three shutout innings. Thunder Reliever Amaury Sanit worked a shutout ninth to pick up his sixth save of the season in six chances. Mariotti scattered six hits and two runs (one earned) in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked five.
Trenton and Bowie play a double-header on Tuesday night. In the first game, RHP Ryan Pope (2-3, 5.26) will start for the Thunder against Bowie RHP Jake Arrieta (4-3, 2.98). In the second game, Trenton's Starting Pitcher is TBD. RHP Pat Egan (0-0, 0.00) will start for Bowie. The scheduled start time for the first game is 6:05 p.m.
