Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- The battle of the Nutmeg State didn't start out the way the Defenders had planned. New Britain came into Norwich and got to RHP-Jesse Foppert early. LF-Matt Moses' grand slam in the third inning jump started the Rock Cats offense en route to a 9-0 win over Connecticut.
Rock Cats' starter RHP-Cole DeVries baffled Defender hitters all night long. Connecticut was able to load the bases in the first inning with no outs. 1B-Brett Pill would ground into a fielder's choice, retiring 2B-Brock Bond at home plate. RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve followed Pill flying out to RF-Rene Tosoni, who threw out SS-Brandon Crawford at home trying to tag up ending the threat in the first. The Defenders managed only 3 hits the rest of the ball game.
In the top of the third inning, the Rock Cats would touch up Jesse Foppert for six runs. 3B-Danny Valencia drew a leadoff walk, 1B-Whit Robbins singled to put runners on the corners. C- Wilson Ramos singled and drove in the Valencia for the first run of the game. After Jesse Foppert's sixth walked batter to load the bases, Matt Moses would send a no doubter over the right field wall to put the Rock Cats up 5-0. The Rock Cats added another run when CF-Brandon Roberts was hit by pitch and came around to score after a stolen base, wild pitch, and error to cap off a 6-run third.
New Britain added lone runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings on RBI singles by 2B-Brian Dinkleman and Wilson Ramos, and an RBI ground out by DH-Erik Lis.
Jesse Foppert (0-3) suffered his first loss of the season going only three innings allowing six runs and walked seven. Cole DeVries (4-4) earned the win for New Britain pitching eight scoreless innings, surrendering five hits and struck out four.
Game two of the best of four series is tomorrow at 6:35pm featuring the pitching match-up of RHP Tim Alderson (2-0) for Connecticut and RHP Matt Fox (4-2) going for New Britain.
