POSTGAME QUOTES: New England Revolution 1 vs. Orlando City SC 1
New England Revolution Sporting Director & Head Coach Bruce Arena
On New England's performance in the first half: Arena: "Just a hard-fought game. We made a couple of mistakes on defending that corner for sure. Give them credit, but we did poorly not winning the initial header, not doing a good job stepping to the player. We had two players that could probably have stood the guy up and you know, we didn't get it done."
On the injury status of Matt Polster: Arena: "I mean, I can't tell you right now. He [Matt Polster] came out of the game with a head injury."
On the performance of Jozy Altidore: Arena: "I thought he [Jozy Altidore] did a good job. He held the ball up. His passing was pretty good."
On Djordje Petrović's performance tonight: Arena: "He [Petrović] did well. Yeah, you'd hope that he could do a little bit better on that goal, but I thought he had another good game."
On how forwards Jozy Altidore and Gustavo Bou worked together: Arena: "Well, it's going take a little time. But I thought Jozy had a good game. And remember, we had a little bit of a disadvantage coming into the game, having played Sunday [in] Kansas City under those conditions. So we were a little heavy legged tonight, for sure."
On how Dylan Borrero is acclimating himself to the team: Arena: "He's getting better. It's going to take time. It's too early to make any judgements. We'll see as we move into the season. But he's done a good job to date."
New England Revolution Forward Jozy Altidore
On what made Orlando City a tough opponent tonight: Altidore: "Yeah, I think they started the game really well. They made it hard on us and they had more of the play. I think you expect that after Sunday's game, you know, in the heat. I think it was tough on us to travel and all that, but I think we stayed in the game well. Obviously, [we] got the first goal and in the end, I think we'll be disappointed giving that goal up. I think Djordje [Petrović] is a fantastic keeper. I think we have to do a better job keeping the ball out of the box. There's nothing you can do up close like that. The guy hit it pretty well. So, I think when we look back at that goal, we'll be a bit disappointed. But I think all in all to not lose and keep our [unbeaten] streak, and, you know, we get a point, keep moving up the table. So, we have to look at the positives."
On his individual performance in tonight's match: Altidore: "I'm feeling great, man. I just, you know, I'm eager to get on the field more. You come to a new club, you want to get those minutes with the guys, especially a team like this. And I think definitely with the group we had out there if I can get some more time, I think I'll get some more chances and just get comfortable. But I thought I did okay. I tried to play within the game and had that one chance. I didn't hit it great, but I think it'll come with more minutes. So hopefully I can keep showing the [coaching] staff that I deserve to play and get some starting minutes."
On New England's struggles to hold leads: Altidore: "Obviously, it's good and bad, right? You start winning the game and then giving up the goals. I think we have to look at how we are giving up goals and I think tonight was a good goal on their part. But if you look at the play as a whole, I think we'll be disappointed, right? It's a second ball, I think a recycled ball and then he fires one in there from the top of the six. So, it's a little frustrating but like I said earlier, [we] get points. I think a game like this maybe we lose a few weeks ago. We need to look at the positives and we are certainly moving in the right direction. Sunday is another opportunity."
On Adam Buksa departing the Revolution for French Ligue 1 club RC Lens: Altidore: "Yeah, it's bittersweet because as a striker you love playing and having strikers like that on your team. They just light a fire under you. The training, the quality is higher. You know, everything's just better when you have good players around, right? So disappointing on that end. But on the other side of it, you know, talking to him these past six months, he really wanted this for a long time. So just really, really delighted for him that he got what he wanted. We're all cheering him on, maybe to watch him in France and speak a little French to him and wish him well. He's a great player, great kid."
New England Revolution Defender Jon Bell
On the team's performance tonight: Bell: "Yeah, it was a tough game on both ends. I think for us, we showed a lot of positives and showed a lot of negatives. I think we're a little bit rusty, moving forward, connecting passes, finishing the last play of the game. So, overall, I thought it was a hard-fought match. We were able to keep them down to one goal, which is always good, especially at home."
On returning to full strength after battling through leg injury: Bell: "Yeah, just had to be patient honestly. Listening to the trainers and focusing on my body recovery- wise, doing everything they asked me and wanted me to do. You know, just making sure that I was ready for these moments to come back in and play a full 90."
On building on his performance in tonight's match: Bell: "I think I did alright. I think it was pretty sloppy passing-wise. I didn't connect on a lot of passes that I think I can do a lot better on. It's all part of it, just coming back into the game. [I'm] Trying to shake that rust off but obviously I can't use that excuse too long. So, overall, yeah, I think I'd probably give myself a C-plus."
On Orlando's goal in the 35th minute: Bell: "Yeah, it was, I feel, a back-post corner. Matt [Polster] tried to get the ball initially, the first ball. [It] didn't happen. He pushed forward down the line, and then it was just one of those goals where it just slips through his legs and gets in the back of the net."
