June 15, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
LA Galaxy News Release
LOS ANGELES - The LA Galaxy today announced programming around Juneteenth, when the club plays host to the Portland Timbers, in a match presented by Herbalife Nutrition, at Dignity Health Sports Park at 2:00 p.m. PT on Saturday, June 18 (ESPN, ESPN Deportes).
The Galaxy collaborated with renowned artist Ernie Barnes to honor and celebrate Barnes' work and career. As fans enter the stadium, they will receive a special Ernie Barnes Commemorative Art Poster Gift, featuring two of his paintings. Jarrett Johnson will sing both the National Anthem and the Black National Anthem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing". Prior to kickoff, the Galaxy will warm up in the adidas UNITY Pre-Match Jersey and the tops will be auctioned off during the match via the LA Galaxy Foundation.
Major League Soccer worked with LGBTQ+ artist Judah Middleton to design a special Juneteenth number font and box, which Middleton created the Juneteenth "Freedom To Be" theme for the pieces. The authentic jerseys and numbers will come with a special limited-edition box that players will fill out the prompts on, and all will be auctioned off via MLS after the match, with proceeds benefitting the Education & Leadership Institute's "BOSS Program" and Project Blue. The number font and limited-edition box are intended to educate and celebrate Juneteenth.
SoccerFest
SoccerFest will be action packed with performances. Let It Happen dance group, sisters Norah, Yarah and Rosa, will perform at the Kinecta Plaza stage. Let It Happen has a desire to inspire people, young and old, with their performances and bring positive changes and awareness into the world.
