Nashville Sounds News Release
DES MOINES â Brad Nelson homered for the second straight night and Jose Capellan tossed seven strong innings to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 6-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs on Tuesday evening at Principal Park in the second game of a four-game series.
With the victory, Nashville (15-11) retained a share of first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.
Trent Durrington added two runs scored and a pair of RBIs for the Sounds.
Nashville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Kevin Orie extended his hitting streak to five games by driving an RBI single to right to plate Durrington, who had walked and stolen his team-leading ninth base of the year. Orie, who recorded his 21st RBI, has hit safely in 20 of his 21 games with an at-bat this season.
Nelson, an Algona, Iowa native, upped the advantage to 3-0 one batter later when he crushed a Jon Leicester pitch over the right field wall for his second home run in as many nights in front of family and friends. The two-run blast, which sent the Iowa starter to the showers, was the outfielder's second roundtripper of the year.
The Sounds doubled their advantage in the fifth against Cubs reliever Will Cunnane. Durrington added two to the Sounds tally with a one-out, two-run triple, plating Capellan and Dave Krynzel who had singled and walked respectively. Prince Fielder followed with an RBI single off the wall in left to increase the lead to 6-0 but was thrown out at second on the play while trying to extend the hit to a double.
Nashville's Chris Barnwell recorded his first career Triple-A hit with a pinch-hit single in the top of the fifth while batting for Orie.
Iowa finally scratched across a run against Capellan in the bottom of the seventh when Mike Fontenot walked and scored on Shane Halter's RBI double off the center field wall.
Krynzel and Fielder each extended his respective hitting streak to four games for Nashville with singles in the contest.
Capellan (2-1) earned the victory after allowing only one run on six hits while striking out five batters over his seven innings of work. Leicester (0-1) took the loss in his first start of the 2005 season after allowing three runs in his 3 1/3 frames. Jeff Bennett tossed two scoreless frames for the Sounds to close out the contest in a non-save situation.
The Sounds and Cubs partake in a noon matinee on Wednesday afternoon, the third game of a four-game series. Right-hander Clint Weibl (0-2, 4.34) makes his third start of the season for Nashville. He is scheduled to face Iowa right-hander Bobby Brownlie (1-1, 6.86).
