Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Curtis Pride's RBI single in the top of the 10th inning plated Casey Smith to give the Salt Lake Stingers a 2-1 victory over the Portland Beavers Monday night at PGE Park.
Smith drew a two-out walk, while Casey Kotchman and Pride followed with singles off Angel Tovar to push across the winning run.
Mike Brunet (3-1) was credited with the win, while Tovar (0-3) suffered the loss after an inning of work.
The loss was just the Beavers' second at home this season and dropped them four games behind the Stingers (15-8) in the North Division of the Pacific Conference.
The teams were limited to a collective 11 hits, while they combined for five errors, including four by Salt Lake.
Both starters delivered solid efforts, but neither factored in the decision.
Clay Hensley, making his first Triple-A start for the Beavers (11-12), struck out six and gave up one run on two hits and a pair of walks over 5.0 innings. Hensley cruised through the first four innings, striking out four straight at one point, but the Stingers managed to tie the game by plating a two-out run in the fifth.
Corey Lee got off to a shaky start but was Hensley's equal through five, fanning eight Portland batters and yielding a run on three hits and a trio of walks.
Kerry Robinson and Damian Jackson singled to start the bottom of the first, and Lee gave up no-out walks to Bobby Scales and Jon Knott to force home Robinson. Lee struck out Josh Barfield and coaxed an inning-ending double play grounder to avoid any further damage.
The series continues Tuesday night at PGE Park in a 7:05 p.m. start.
NOTES: Earlier in the day, Portland first baseman Robert Fick had his contract purchased by the San Diego Padres. Fick, who batted .375 with three homers and 11 RBIs in 10 games with the Beavers, took the roster spot of Geoff Blum, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a chest contusion ... also on Monday, the Padres transferred center fielder Freddy Guzman to the 60-day DL. Guzman recently underwent right ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction ... catcher Seth McCauley, who was placed on the Beavers disabled list on April 21, has left the team for further evaluation on his right-elbow ailment in San Diego ... Robinson (nine games) and Jackson (seven games) extended their personal hitting streaks with first-inning singles. Scales saw his seven-gamer come to an end by going 0-for-4.
