August 4, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
BILOXI, Miss. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (16-26, 44-66) defeated the Biloxi Shuckers (22-19, 63-48) by a 5-1 score in the third game of the five-game series at MGM Park on Saturday night.
Jacksonville right-handed starter Nick Neidert (10-6) earned the victory, becoming the first Southern League or Miami Marlins minor league pitcher to reach 10 victories this season. The Marlins No. 3 prospect worked eight innings, striking out a career-high 13 batters as he allowed just one run on five hits with no walks. Neidert enjoyed a dominant stretch from the second inning to the seventh where he set down 15 hitters in a row, including striking out seven straight batters which came just one strikeout shy of tying the Southern League record for most consecutive strikeouts.
Biloxi right-handed relief pitcher Daniel Reynolds (2-1) took the loss.
Justin Twine gave Jacksonville the early advantage with a solo homer in the top of the first to put the score at 1-0, and Twine has hit safely in 14 of his first 15 games at the Double-A level. The Shuckers tied the game in the bottom of the second inning with a solo homer from Clint Coulter to put the score at 1-1.
That score remained until the bottom of the seventh, when Neidert helped his own cause with an RBI single to break the tie and push the Shrimp in front 2-1. On a ground ball hit by Braxton Lee, Biloxi second baseman Keston Hiura had a throwing error to bring in the next two Jumbo Shrimp runs to put Jacksonville's lead at 4-1. Rodrigo Vigil added a solo homer in the ninth to put Jacksonville's lead at 5-1, which would be the final.
Jacksonville right-handed relief pitcher Tommy Eveld worked in his second straight game, working a scoreless ninth to preserve the win.
The Jumbo Shrimp will continue their five-game series with the Biloxi Shuckers with the fourth game of the five-game set at MGM Park at 5:05 p.m. eastern on Sunday evening. Right-handed starting pitcher Max Duval (2-11, 7.46 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against a Biloxi starter to be announced. Fans can listen to Sunday's game on the Jumbo Shrimp Network presented by Community First, beginning at 4:50 p.m. eastern with the pregame show "Shrimp On Deck" locally on Sunny 102.3 FM, on the TuneIn Radio app, and www.jaxshrimp.com.
