Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham Barons (54-57) couldn't muster the offensive support needed to back up another strong outing from Dylan Cease, falling 1-0 to the Mobile BayBears (54-54) at Regions Field on Saturday.
Moments That Mattered: For the third outing in a row, Cease showed his command on the mound as he kept the BayBears scoreless behind nine strikeouts over six complete innings of work. Mobile sent eight batters to the plate before Brandon Sandoval's single in the third inning marked the only blemish against the White Sox No. 5 prospect.
By the Numbers: After giving up a three-run homer to Jackson's Rudy Flores on July 20, Cease hasn't given up another run, keeping opponents out of the run column for 23 consecutive innings following Saturday's scoreless effort. He has now recorded three straight quality starts and four since joining the Birmingham rotation.
Turning Point: Following Cease's departure, Mobile strung together a pair of pivotal singles in the top of the eighth. After Matt Foster (L, 0-3) fanned the first two BayBears of the inning, Sandoval reached on his second single of the night before stealing second. Jahmai Jones then laced a line drive just out of the reach of Danny Mendick and into left field, plating Sandoval for the game's winning run.
Facts and Figures: The low-scoring affair saw the BayBears out-hit the Barons 6-5. Trey Michalczewski paced Birmingham at the plate with a pair of hits, while Alex Call, Zack Collins and Matt Rose each added a hit on the night. Michalczewski, Rose and Call all recorded a double in the one-run loss.
Up Next: The Barons and BayBears face off again in a Sunday matinee with first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m. Southpaw Kodi Medeiros (7-5, 3.06) will toe the rubber for Birmingham while right-hander Alex Klonowski (7-2, 4.65) gets the start for Mobile. Curt Bloom will have the call on 960 WERC News Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
