June 14, 2023 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
North Carolina Courage News Release
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The North Carolina Courage got a stoppage time winner from Olivia Wingate for a 1-2 win in the UKG Challenge Cup against the Washington Spirit at Audi Field. The Courage are now unbeaten in 13 straight NWSL Challenge Cup matches.
The Courage had a hard fought first half with almost a 60% possession rate and 24 final third entries. The Spirit came into the second half strong with a goal nine minutes into the half. Brittany Ratcliffe answered after taking a touch around the keeper and burying the ball in the net to tie it up just minutes later for her first goal of the season.
There was a true battle between North Carolina and the Spirit came late in the second half. The Courage defense held off multiple offensive attempts from Washington and were determined to keep them from scoring. Kaleigh Kurtz held her own in the center back position with seven clearances and taking multiple ariel duels in the box. However, when it came down to the extra time Olivia Wingate sealed the deal for the Courage after Kerolin made a perfect pass to Haley Hopkins who selflessly laid the ball off to Wingate for her first NWSL goal.
Match Notes:
The North Carolina Courage are now unbeaten in 13 straight NWSL Challenge Cup Matches (W7 D6), which is the longest unbeaten run in tournament history.
North Carolina are now unbeaten in six Challenge Cup matches against Washington (W4 D2), including winning last year's final, 2- 1, at home.
Olivia Wingate scored her first NWSL goal with the Courage, which pairs with fellow rookie Haley Hopkins receiving her first assist in the NWSL.
Next Match: The Courage will be back at home to face Orlando Pride after a month long away stretch on Saturday, June 17 at 7:00 PM at WakeMed Soccer Park. The match will stream live on Paramount+.
