LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The BlueClaws got eight strong innings from Drew Naylor and hung on for a 3-2 victory over Greensboro on Wednesday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park.
Naylor (4-2) allowed just two runs over his eight innings, while allowing six hits. It was the third time in his last four starts that the BlueClaws ace lasted at least eight innings.
Naylor's six strikeouts also moved him back into sole possession of the Minor League Baseball strikeout lead. The right-hander now has 71 on the season, four more than former BlueClaw Antonio Bastardo.
Naylor was rarely challenged, allowing two runners to reach in an inning just twice. He recorded four 1-2-3 innings.
The win was the first for the BlueClaws in six games against Greensboro this season and just the third in 18 games against the 'Hoppers since the start of 2007.
Lakewood struck for an early 2-0 lead with single runs in each of the first two frames. Michael Taylor and Herman Demmink accounted for the RBIs against Greensboro starter Alejandero Santabia.
Taylor drove in two runs, including the game-winner in the seventh inning on a fielder's choice, to run his season RBI total to a team-high 32.
Justin Jacobs hit his second home run of the season to lead off the sixth inning. It cut the BlueClaws lead to 2-1 and was the sixth home run of this season that Naylor has surrendered.
Santabia (0-1), who was making his first start of the season after being called up from extended spring training on Tuesday, pitched five innings, allowing just the two early runs. The right-hander allowed five hits, struck out two and walked two.
Jared Simon pitched a perfect ninth inning for Lakewood to earn his fifth save of the season.
The BlueClaws (22-24) have now won three of their last four games and look to keep things rolling against Greensboro (25-21) on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. Walter Tejeda (3-2) will take the hill for the 'Claws, while Brett Durand (5-2) will make his second start of the season against Lakewood.
