Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - In front of close to 4,000 fans the Hagerstown Suns (23-22) could not hold onto a late lead versus the Lexington Legends (14-31). With the game tied at seven, Lexington left fielder Collin DeLome launched a home run to put the Legends on top in the eighth inning. It was DeLome's second home run of the game.
Hagerstown put a run up in the top of the first, but Suns starter Colton Willems did not have his best stuff. Willems went just four innings and gave up four runs.
The Suns were able to tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. After a Michael Burgess single, center fielder Mark Gildea doubled down the right field line. Second baseman Jake Smolinski singled back up the middle to bring both runners around. A single by catcher Travis Reagan moved Smolinski to third and the Suns put on the squeeze. Left fielder Boomer Whiting laid down a perfect bunt that brought in Smolinski from third and tied the game at four.
The Suns made it a two run lead in the sixth, but Lexington came back with three of their own in the seventh. Eric Taylor singled to start the inning and advanced to second on an error. Designated hitter Max Sapp followed that up with a ground-rule double to score Taylor. Steve Brown lined a single to left which moved Sapp to third. After a sacrifice fly tied it at six, third baseman Craig Corrado singled to left field to give the Legends a one run lead.
The lead did not last long as the Suns scored a run in the bottom half of the frame. A Gildea walk was followed by a Smolinski base hit and an error by the Legends. The throwing error brought Gildea in from second.
Ryan Harrison (0-1) took the loss for the Suns. Harrison pitched just over one inning and gave up three runs on five hits. Legends reliever Brett Robinson (2-1) picked up his second win of the season. Fernando Abad worked two scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the year.
The Suns and Legends play game three of the series tomorrow at 6:35 at Municipal Stadium.
