Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE - The Tourists rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 4-3 win on Education Day at McCormick Field. The win puts the Tourists at 17 games over .500 - their high water mark for the 2008 season.
With the game deadlocked at two-all in the bottom of the eighth, Brian Aguailar led off the frame with a single. Brian Rike walked with two outs to bring up Darin Holcomb, who doubled to plate both runners and break the tie to give the Tourists a 4-2 lead.
Jhoulys Chacin (7-1) pitched well for the Tourists today, but got into some trouble in the fourth. He walked the leadoff hitter and gave up a single to Jason Heyward. With no outs and runners on the corners, Chacin's pickoff attempt went wide of first base to score Benji Johnson and move Heyward to third. Chacin buckled down to strike out the side and pitch his way out of the jam.
The Tourists evened things up in the fifth with an Aguailar RBI groundout, but Rome struck back an inning later on a Freddie Freeman double - one of the few hard hits off Chacin. Asheville once again tied the game in the bottom of the seventh after Jeffrey Cunningham's leadoff double. Manager Joe Mikulik called on Everth Cabrera to pinch-run for Cunningham and it paid off. Cabrera stole third base, and then scored on Brian Lapin's sacrifice fly.
Chacin showed spot on command all day long, twirling eight masterful innings on only three hits. He gave up just one earned run and struck out ten - a season high - while walking three. Randall Taylor pitched the ninth, surviving Freeman's solo home run to pick up his 13th save of the season. Edgar Osuna (1-2) takes the loss for Rome after allowing both Asheville runs in the eighth.
Game three of the series will be tomorrow night at McCormick Field. Cory Riordan (5-2 2.26) gets the start for the Tourists while Rome turns to Jose Ortegano (1-3, 4.40) in an attempt for their first win of the series. It's another Thirsty Thursday with dollar soft drinks and domestic drafts available all night long. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on the Tourists flagship station WRES-FM.
