Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Dressed in New York Yankees uniforms, fans could have mistaken the Charleston RiverDogs for the 1927 "Murderers Row." With 10 different batters accounting for the team's 18 hits, the RiverDogs handed the Drive their most lopsided loss in team history at 20-2.
Looking more like Babe Ruth than a South Atlantic League first baseman, Brian Baisley finished 5-for-6 with a pair of round trippers, seven RBI, and four runs scored. Two of Baisley's career-high RBI total came in the top of the fourth, when Charleston sent 16 batters to the plate, scoring 12 runs.
The Drive were forced to use three different pitchers in the inning as starter Jose Alvarez (2-6) was chased away after recording just one out, eventually being charged with six earned runs. Reliever Chad Povich did not fair much better as he was only able to get one out, surrendering six more runs. A Taylor Holiday fly out mercifully ended the inning.
Two innings later the RiverDogs offense continued their onslaught as they scored seven more runs off Kyle Fernandes. Three batters - Baisley, Walter Ibarra, and Chase Odenreider - accounted for all of Charleston's runs in the inning. Baisley started it with a three-run homer, Ibarra roped a two-run double, and Odenreider finished it with a two-run homer.
Baisley capped off Charleston's prolific day with his second homer of the day in the ninth inning off Matt Cooney. Cooney, who is regularly a catcher, was the sixth different pitcher that the Drive used in the ballgame.
The game actually began in the Drive's favor as they took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Without tallying a hit in the inning, Luis Exposito walked and eventually came around to score on a Will Vazquez sacrifice fly. Greenville scored their second run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-single by Oscar Tejeda.
With 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, Craig Heyer (3-0) earned the win as Charleston starter, Dellin Betances, lasted only 4.1 innings.
The Drive and RiverDogs continue their four-game series tomorrow night with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Lefty Felix Doubront will toe the rubber for Greenville as they look to bounce back. Charleston will counter with right-hander Lance Pendleton.
