Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

SPRINGDALE, AR - J.C. Sulbaran held the Hooks to two runs in six innings as the Naturals avoided a sweep and dispatched Corpus Christi 3-2 before 3,414 Thursday night at Arvest Ballpark.

Trailing 2-1, Northwest Arkansas (30-15) scratched across two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Hooks starter Mark Appel allowed three straight singles to start the inning and tied the game, but then struck out Alex Liddi and converted an out at the plate on a Kenny Diekroeger bunt attempt. After Appel walked Ethan Chapman to load the bases, Travis Ballew came on and Terrance Gore put down a squeeze bunt to give the Naturals a 3-2 lead.

Gore was in the middle of the Naturals' first tally as well, with a walk and a stolen base in the third inning, leading to a sacrifice fly by Jorge Bonifacio.

Corpus Christi (31-15) tied the game in the fifth on a Jio Mier double and took the lead on Conrad Gregor's second home run in as a many nights in the sixth, but the Hooks went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Sulbaran (4-3) worked six innings and yielded two earned runs on seven hits, while Appel (3-1) fell just short of matching him. The Stanford product tossed five and two-thirds frames and allowed three earned runs on nine hits, as he bounced back from a pair outings in which he failed to complete more than four innings.

The Hooks ran into outs at home plate twice Thursday night. The first occurrence came in the fourth inning, when with one out Conrad Gregor was off with contact on a Danry Vasquez ground ball. The second time was in the seventh when Tony Kemp tried to score from second on Mark Peterson's wild pitch.

Andrew Aplin extended his hitting streak to eight games with a third-inning single.

The Hooks open a three-game series against the Arkansas Travelers in North Little Rock Friday night at 7:05. The tandem of Chris Devenski (5-0, 0.66) and Josh Hader (1-2, 3.63) will pitch for Corpus Christi against the Travelers' Alan Busenitz (1-4, 6.63).
