Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

Nashville, TN - Kevin Mattison hit the game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Nashville to a dramatic 5-4 win over Omaha Monday night in the opener of a five-game set at Greer Stadium. The Storm Chasers fell to 19-23 overall and 2-3 on their current nine-game road trip through Tennessee. The last time Omaha lost on a walk-off home run was May 9, 2012 to the Sacramento River Cats.

Ramon Troncoso opened the decisive frame on the hill and retired the first batter he faced, Hector Gomez, on a fly ball to deep right field. Mattison then battled the Omaha right-hander through 10 pitches before depositing his 11th offering of the at-bat over the wall in right field to give the Sounds their seventh victory in 12 games against the Storm Chasers this season. Melky Mesa's second solo home run of the night, an opposite field shot to right with two outs in the seventh, got the game tied at four and knocked Nashville starter Brad Mills from the mound after he had allowed six hits, walked a pair and fanned six. Former Storm Chasers hurler Jeremy Jeffress took over and tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.

The Chasers struck first for a trio of runs in the third on a lead off long ball by Mesa and run-scoring singles by Jimmy Paredes and Paulo Orlando that ended a 21-inning streak for Mills during which he had not allowed an earned run. Omaha starter P.J. Walters, who had been roughed up for 19 earned run in 10 innings over his last four outings, kept the hosts off the board until the fourth when Taylor Green singled with two outs to knock in Hunter Morris.

The hosts drew within a run in the sixth when Caleb Gindl, who had walked to open the frame and advanced to third on a Morris base hit, scored on a wild pitch that also advanced Morris to second base. Following a walk to Jeremy Hermida, Walters was lifted from the hill and replaced by Justin Marks. The runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a double by Green that put Nashville in front for the first time at 4-3 and closed the book on Walters, who yielded four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three over his five innings of work.

The series continues Tuesday morning with Omaha left-hander John Lamb taking the mound against Nashville right-hander Ariel Pena. Coverage of the game gets underway at 10:45 am and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
