Iowa Cubs News Release
Des Moines, IA - The Chicago Cubs have assigned OF Justin Ruggiano to the Iowa Cubs on a Major League rehab assignment today. Ruggiano has been sidelined since April 24 with a left hamstring strain. Iowa has also added OF Casper Wells from extended spring training and placed RH Marcos Mateo on the disabled list today.
Ruggiano played in 14 games for the Chicago Cubs and hit .229 (8-for-35) with one homer and six RBI before the injury. He's in his first year in the Cubs organization after being acquired in a trade from Miami for OF Brian Bogusevic in December. Ruggiano has batted .251 (236-for-942) with 38 homers and 115 RBI in 331 big league contests, covering parts of six seasons.
Wells is in his 10th professional season and has seen major league action with five teams. He was with three clubs -- Oakland, Chicago (A.L.), Philadelphia -- last season and hit a combined .126 (12-for-95) in 53 games. He was drafted by the Tigers in 2005 and spent the first six and half years of his career with that organization before being traded to Seattle as part of a five-player deal in July. Wells is a lifetime .230 (158-for-688) major league hitter with 25 home runs and 81 RBI in 277 games. The 29-year-old is in his first year in the Cubs organization after signing a minor league contract in November.
Mateo is on the DL due to a back strain. He has no record, a 5.84 ERA, (8ER/12.1IP), and two saves in 13 appearances this season. The 30-year-old has pitched in 50 career games with Iowa and 44 with Chicago. He's in his seventh year in the Cubs organization after originally signing as an amateur free agent with Cincinnati in 2004.
The Cubs hit the road for a brief four-game series against the Round Rock Express starting Monday night at 7:05 Central time. Rusin (2-5, 3.92) takes the ball for the Cubs from Dell Diamond. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45 p.m. The I- Cubs return to Principal Park for a four-game home stand against Colorado Springs beginning Friday, May 23 at 7:05.
