Memphis Redbirds News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - Kyle Parker delivered a single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth inning to give Colorado Springs the 1-0 walk-off win over Memphis on Monday night.
The Sky Sox improved to 4-1 in extra inning games, while the Redbirds dropped their first contest in extras during the series opener at Security Service Field.
After Memphis went in order in their half of the tenth, Colorado Springs loaded the bases with a walk and two singles. Parker stepped to the plate and with the infield in, drove a grounder up the middle scoring Rafael Ynoa from third for the game's first run and the win. The victory advanced the Sky Sox record in one-run games to 9-3, as the Redbirds' mark plunged to 1-7.
Zach Petrick (ND, 2-1, 3.57) turned in his best outing as a Redbird. The right-hander tossed his longest Triple-A outing Monday night, going seven innings and allowing only three hits on 96 pitches (57 strikes). He added one walk and three strikeouts, but did not factor into the decision.
The 'Birds best chance came way back in the second inning. With two outs, Audry Perez (2-4, 2B) and Jermaine Curtis (1-2, 2 BB) notched back-to-back singles and Luis Mateo (0-3, BB) followed with a walk. The bases were loaded for Petrick, but the pitcher failed to make contact, waving through a 1-2 pitch.
Twice the Redbirds belted two-out doubles, one from Scott Moore (1-4, 2B) in the sixth and another from Oscar Taveras (1-4, 2B) during the eighth, but were unable to cash in with the runner in scoring position. The team finished 0-for-5 in that category on Monday night.
Colorado Springs also had ample opportunities, leaving a total of 11 runners on base, but Memphis pitching continued their strong month of May and kept the home team at bay.
Sam Freeman, fresh off his return from St. Louis, threw 1.2 shutout innings. The left-hander surrendered two hits, but had three strikeouts in relief. Chad Bettis ended up with the win for the Sky Sox, allowing only one hit in two shutout frames. He came on in the ninth for Christian Bergman who matched a season-high with eight innings of work. Bergman gave up four hits and two walks, taking a no-decision.
Memphis and Colorado Springs continue their four-game series at Security Service Field with a 7:35 pm CT first pitch. Right-hander Scott McGregor (0-5, 6.81) will be opposed by lefty Christian Friedrich (1-4, 7.12).
