New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Alex Sanabia took full advantage of his first chance to turn his season around Monday in his return to the New Orleans Zephyrs, holding the Oklahoma City RedHawks scoreless through five innings of a 6-2 Zephyrs victory to open their eight-game homestand at Zephyr Field.
The RedHawks managed three hits, no walks and struck out five times against Sanabia (1-1), who made his first start for the Zephyrs since August 23, 2012 after the Z's added him to the roster Monday.
Sanabia entered the game 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA on the season in eight appearances (four starts) with the Reno Aces, the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, which released him on May 5. The Marlins signed him four days later, and he allowed just one RedHawks runner past first base in his first outing since May 4.
The Zephyrs offense provided him with all six of their runs in those first five innings, including a solo home run by Kyle Jensen in the second inning and a three-run homer by Mark Canha in the third that gave the Z's a 4-0 lead.
Jake Marisnick singled and scored on an error by Kike Hernandez in the fourth inning, and Jensen doubled and scored on a single by Rob Brantly.
All of the Z's runs came against Oklahoma City starter Brett Oberholtzer (1-1), although five were earned, on nine hits.
Rett Varner threw two scoreless innings in relief of Sanabia, allowing no hits and one wlak while striking out two.
The RedHawks scored their two runs off of Dan Jennings, who took over for Varner to begin the eighth inning. Jennings allowed one hit but walked four, including a free pass to Jon Singleton that scored Andy Zimunic. Robbie Grossman drove home Ronny Torreyes for the first run of the inning before Jennings walked Domingo Santana to load the bases for Singleton.
Chaz Roe came in with the bases still loaded and two outs in the inning, and he struck out Gregorio Petit to end the threat. Roe also pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
The Zephyrs and RedHawks will play the second contest of their four-game series at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Zephyr Field. Brian Flynn (4-2, 3.27 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Zephyrs against Jake Buchanan (3-3, 3.19 ERA) for Oklahoma City.
