Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - RHP Chris Schwinden was solid in his Round Rock Express (22-21) debut Monday night, allowing two runs in six innings as the E-Train upended the Iowa Cubs (22-19) 4-2 at Dell Diamond.
Schwinden, who signed with the Texas Rangers this past Friday after making four starts with the independent Lancaster Barnstormers, held the I-Cubs to just two hits after a two-run first inning. The 27-year old Californian struck out six and walked none to pick up his first win of the season in affiliated baseball.
Iowa scored its only two runs in the first off Schwinden. Cubs cleanup hitter 1B Chris Valaika plated the first run of the game on an RBI groundout and DH Josh Vitters followed with an RBI base hit to center to make it 2-1.
The Express responded with a run in the home half to cut its deficit to one after one. LF Ryan Strausborger led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a RBI groundout by DH Brad Snyder later in the inning.
CF Jared Hoying evened things up with a solo home run to lead off the fourth. Hoying now has nine dingers on the season, one behind Snyder who leads the team.
Round Rock pulled ahead 4-2 with two runs in the fifth. RF Bryan Petersen scored 1B Adam Rosales from second with a one-out single to left field. After advancing to second on a groundout, Petersen came across to score when Cubs 2B Arismendy Alcantara threw wildly to first on a two-out infield single by 3B Donnie Murphy.
Right-handed relievers Ben Rowen and Randy Henry held the I-Cubs scoreless through the seventh and eighth innings before RHP Lisalverto Bonilla went three up, three down in the ninth to lockdown his first save of the season.
Strausborger, Petersen and Hoying each had two hits to lead the E-Train's offensive attack.
The Express and Cubs will be back at it Tuesday night, as they play game two of their four-game series at Dell Diamond. Bring the whole family out to take advantage of half-priced tickets, presented by A+ Federal Credit Union, as LHP Joe Saunders (0-1, 3.60 ERA) makes his second rehab start for Round Rock against Iowa's RHP Carlos Pimentel (1-3, 5.23 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
