Wheeling Nailers News Release
The Nailers had six different players light the lamp in a 6-2 triumph over the Trenton Devils Sunday night at WesBanco Arena to move into a first place tie in the North Division.
Wheeling is 17-4-5 with 39 points at the holiday break. They are tied at the top with the Johnstown Chiefs but have 2 games in hand. The Nailers have won 8 of their last 10 and rebounded nicely after a Friday night 7-3 loss with back to back wins.
Aaron Clarke started the scoring with a goal from the right dot while he was falling down. He fired the puck off the top of the glove of Trenton goalie Charlie Effinger for his 9th of the year.
Jim Henkel tied the game for the Devils at 11:17 of the 1st but the tie lasted less than a minute as Jordan Morrison rifled it into the slot at 12:05 and it deflected off a Devils defender and into the net. It was Morrison's 10th of the year and 3rd of the weekend.
Eric Johnson took a rebound off a Matt Grennier shot and buried it for his 4th of the year at 18:23 giving the Nailers a 3-1 lead at the first break.
The Nailers scored a pair of goals in the 2nd period from Rob Sirianni and Reid Cashman. Sirianni's was his team leading 17th of the season and his 9th in just 6 games since returning from his 3 week call-up to Binghamton of the AHL. Cashman notched his 2nd of the season, both coming this weekend.
Elgin Reid capped the scoring as he raced forward on a short-handed rush at 1:32 of the 3rd for his 6th of the year and his 2nd shorthanded.
David Brown was stellar in net for the Nailers returning from an off-performance in Friday's 7-3 loss. Brown turned aside 37 of Trenton's 39 shots including 21 out of 22 drives in the 3rd period. Brown made several spectacular saves including denying a break-away opportunity early in the 3rd. With 30 seconds remaining he raced out to the top of the face-off circle to jump on a puck before Trenton's Eric Castonguay could reach it for a breakaway opportunity.
Brown improved to 6-1-2 with the victory.
