Checkers Dump Stingrays in Shootout, 2-1

Charlotte, N.C. - Checkers defenseman Michael Busto tied the game with just over a minute to go in regulation and Charlotte struck twice in the shootout for a 2-1 victory over the visiting South Carolina Stingrays.
After a scoreless first period, the Checkers had a chance to get on the board when Matthew Ford was awarded his second penalty shot in as many nights. However, the results weren't the same as the last game as Ford couldn't get a shot away on Stingrays goalie Bobby Goepfert,. Despite several power play chances and quality shots for both teams, the game remained scoreless after two periods.
The third period saw the scoring begin and it started for the Stingrays when forward Paul Kelly flipped a shot that beat Checkers netminder Jeff Jakaitis through a scoreen at 4:11. It looked bleak for the Checkers but late game heroics by Checkers defenseman Michael Busto tied the contest. Busto found himself all alone in front of the net and he snuck a shot past Goepfert on the blocker side at 18:34. Neither team could muster a goal during the overtime so the game went to a shootout.
The Checkers received goals from Peter Tsimikalis and Matthew Ford and the Stingrays could only manage to get a tally from Johan Kroll giving Charlotte a 2-1 victory.
