Wheeling Nailers News Release

The Wheeling Nailers started the 2011-12 season by making some noise in the state of South Carolina. The Nailers won both of their games over the weekend, smoking the Greenville Road Warriors 6-1 on Friday night, before continuing their strong play with a 4-1 win over the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday.

On Friday, the Nailers had a rough first minute, as they took a minor penalty, which ultimately led to a power play goal. However, the final 59 minutes of the contest belonged to the visitors, as Wheeling scored the game's final six goals. Second year forward Mickael Bedard paced the offensive attack with a two-goal effort, while rookie defenseman Nick Plastino chipped in with a shorthanded goal and an assist. Plastino's goal was the first of his professional career, after spending the past four seasons in Italy. Patrick Killeen backstopped the victory, stopping 19 consecutive shots.

On Saturday, the strong play from the rookies continued, as Chris Barton recorded his first professional goal midway through the first period. South Carolina evened the score with a 5-on-3 goal at the 9:33 mark of the second, but the tie was short-lived, as the Nailers answered with two goals in 1:58. Barton's second goal of the contest (which came shorthanded) put Wheeling back on top, while Patrick Johnson's first career marker gave the visitors some insurance. With 5:14 remaining in the game, Matt Lombardi salted away the victory with the club's first power play goal of the campaign. Patrick Killeen made 17 saves for his second win in a row.
