Wheeling Nailers News Release
READING, PA -- The Wheeling Nailers scored two third period goals to rally past the Reading Royals 2-1 at the Sovereign Center Sunday evening. The win snaps an eight-game winless streak against Reading this season.
For the first time in seven games, the Wheeling Nailers did not score the opening goal of the contest. Reading forward Chris Blight charged into the zone on the right wing side, and fed a perfect cross ice pass to Andrew Sarauer. Sarauer took the puck on the feed and tapped it into the net past Nailers goaltender Peter Delmas on the backside. Reading took a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period.
The Nailers continued to create chances, outshooting the Royals 16-3 in the second period. Despite the barrage of shots, Reading netminder Matt Dalton was able to turn aside all that the Nailers threw at him in the middle frame, as the Royals held onto the 1-0 lead after 40 minutes played.
The Nailers continued their offensive assault in the third. Wheeling tied the game at one on the power at 3:08 of the period. Joey Haddad flipped a pass in front to Sam D'Agostino who stuffed the puck past Dalton from the top of the crease for the goal.
Nearly five minutes later, Ryan Schnell grabbed the loose puck on the wall and fired a shot from the corner. The puck banked off of Dalton and trickled across the goal line to give Wheeling a 2-1 lead. Reading received two power plays opportunities in the game's final seven minutes However, the Nailers penalty kill was able to fend off the Royals shooters to preserve the 2-1 road victory.
Goaltender Peter Delmas earns his tenth win of the season making 18 saves, while Dalton suffers his first lost against Wheeling this season in six games played. The Nailers outshot the Royals 70-40 in the two games played this weekend. The win was the Nailers first against Reading since October 28, 2010.
The Nailers battle division rival Kalamazoo on Friday in Johnstown for Pink in the Rink night at the Cambria County War Memorial.
