Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - In the Saturday night rubber match of a three-game set, the Victoria Salmon Kings took on the Bakersfield Condors at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Victoria started Toronto, Ontario native Chris Beckford-Tseu in net, while Burnaby, B.C. born Brian Stewart was between the pipes for Bakersfield. Canucks' national anthem singer Mark Donnelly kicked off the evening with a rousing rendition of O Canada.

The start of the first period saw back-and-forth play between the two clubs. At the 12:48 mark, Condors' defenseman Erik Burgdoerfer prevented a clearing attempt that led to a scoring chance for Bakersfield The rookie defenseman gained control and sent the puck on net where it was picked up and deposited by Stephane Goulet. The goal gave Goulet his team leading 20th goal of the year. Just 26 seconds later the Condors extended their lead when Vyacheslav Trukhno centered a pass from behind the goal to Guillaume Lefebvre. The veteran forward buried home his sixth marker of the campaign from the right side of the net under Beckford-Tseu. While shorthanded at 16:58, Chad Painchaud stole the puck at his own blue line to send himself on a breakaway. Painchaud skated to the hash marks then let a perfect wrist shot go that beat Stewart for his 17th goal of the season. Bakersfield led Victoria 2-1 going into the first intermission.

The second frame saw the Salmon Kings pour pressure on Bakersfield as they fired 19 total shots towards Stewart. While on the power play, midway through the frame, Victoria nearly tied the match as Milan Gajic dished a pass to Ryan Turek as he streaked down the right wing. Turek fired the puck on net, but had his shot swallowed up by Stewart. At the 12:36 mark, Goulet brought the puck into the Salmon Kings' zone and let the puck go from between the faceoff circles. The shot was stopped by Beckford-Tseu, but Adam Naglich was on the doorstep to score his 12th marker of the year and double the Condors lead. Victoria responded only 1:24 later when Josh Aspenlind took a shot from inside the slot. Aspenlind's attempt was denied, but Bryan Cameron was in front of the net to put in the rebound for his third tally of the year. The Condors netted a late goal with 31 seconds left in the period as Goulet capitalized on a two-on-one opportunity when his shot snuck through the legs of Beckford-Tseu. Goulet's goal was his second of the game and gave his squad a 4-2 lead through two periods.

The Salmon Kings began the third period on the penalty kill, but the shorthanded squad stood tall to negate any quality scoring chances. Seconds after the penalty expired, Goulet circled around the back of the cage and pocketed his third goal of the match to put the Condors up by three. The remainder of the final frame was dictated by the Salmon Kings as they looked to pull closer. Victoria had a couple of late scoring chances, but were unable to solve Stewart as the Bakersfield goaltender kept the home side at bay. Condors 5 Salmon Kings 2.

Victoria went 0/5=00.0% on the power play, while Bakersfield was 0/5=00.0%. The Salmon Kings and Condors tied in shots 29-29.
