December 21, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers took home another divisional point on Wednesday night, but it was the Elmira Jackals who ended up with the bonus point. Riley Armstrong broke a 2-2 tie with 1:48 remaining in overtime, lifting the Jackals to a 3-2 victory in front of 2,325 fans at WesBanco Arena.
Both teams found the twine in an opening period with eight shots on goal per squad. Elmira started the scoring at the 3:54 mark, when Louie Caporusso took a feed from Dustin Gazley, and scored on a wrist shot from the left face-off circle. The Nailers answered quickly, evening the score 2:39 later. After a quick give-and-go with Olivier Dame-Malka, Zack Torquato skated the puck into the right circle, and buried a power play goal with a wrist shot from the dot.
Midway through the second period, Wheeling took the lead, with their second power play marker of the evening. Zack Torquato setup Olivier Dame-Malka, who drilled in a one-timer from the middle of the blueline. The Jackals tied the score later in the frame, when Louie Caporusso sent a pass through the crease to Mike Radja, who knocked the puck in past Patrick Killeen.
After a scoreless third period, Elmira escaped with the victory at the 3:12 mark of overtime. Riley Armstrong made a rush from his own blueline, into the offensive zone, before snapping in a wrist shot from high in the slot.
Nick Niedert picked up his first career win in goal for the Jackals, after making 24 saves on 26 shots. Patrick Killeen received the overtime loss, despite stopping 20 of the 23 shots he faced.
The Nailers will be off until Monday night, when they travel to Elmira for a rematch against the Jackals at 7:05. Wheeling's next home game takes place on December 31st at 7:35, when they welcome the Reading Royals to WesBanco Arena.
