Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced three transactions, which all take effect immediately. Pittsburgh assigned goaltender Eric Hartzell to Wheeling, the Nailers received forward Tyler Murovich from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and also received goaltender Franky Palazzese from the Hamilton Bulldogs.
Hartzell, 25, is entering his second professional season, after splitting the 2013-14 campaign between Wheeling and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Eric posted a winning record at both the ECHL and AHL levels, going 8-5-1 with the Nailers and 10-8-1 with the Penguins, compiling an 18-13-2 mark overall. One of the White Bear Lake, MN native's brightest moments in Wheeling was his first career win, when turned aside 37 shots in a 1-0 shutout against Elmira. In March, he rattled off a stretch of five consecutive wins, helping to lead the Nailers into the postseason. Hartzell also saw a run of success in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, as he secured AHL Goaltender of the Month honors in January. Prior to turning pro, Eric attended Quinnipiac University, where he reached the NCAA National Championship Game as a senior.
Murovich, 24, also has a history with the Nailers, but fans in Wheeling haven't had a chance to call the Pittsburgh, PA native their own since the 2010-11 season. Tyler recorded five goals and ten points in 20 regular season games with the Nailers, before potting three goals and six points in 14 playoff tilts, as the team reached the Eastern Conference Final. Since then, the veteran forward has suited up with the Gwinnett Gladiators and Orlando Solar Bears in the ECHL, in addition to the Hamilton Bulldogs and Iowa Wild in the AHL. During his professional career, Murovich has appeared in 271 games, accumulating 60 goals, 75 assists, and 135 points.
Palazzese, 21, is currently the youngest player at training camp with the Nailers, as he enters his rookie season. Prior to joining the professional ranks, Franky spent four full seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, playing for the Kingston Frontenacs, Kitchener Rangers, and Sudbury Wolves. The Toronto, ON native had great success in his home province, posting a winning record and at least a .910 save percentage in each of his final three seasons. As a 20-year old in 2013-14, Palazzese finished fourth in the OHL in games played (60), while finishing seventh in wins (27), sixth in save percentage (.916), and tied for third in shutouts (5). Franky's overall record in those four years was 71-69-26.
The Wheeling Nailers open the preseason on Friday night at 7:35, when they host the Cincinnati Cyclones. Opening night is Saturday, October 18th, when the Nailers take on the Reading Royals at 7:35. For tickets and more information, call (304) 234-GOAL.
