ANCHORAGE, AK - For the second consecutive night, the Indy Fuel topped the defending Kelly Cup Champion Alaska Aces by a 3-1 final score on Wednesday at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska. With the win, the Fuel improved to 2-0-0-0 in the preseason with one game remaining in their exhibition schedule prior to the team's regular season opener vs. the Fort Wayne Komets at the Fairgrounds Coliseum in Indianapolis on October 17th.
For the second consecutive game, the Fuel and Aces battled to a scoreless tie in the first period with neither team earning a power-play opportunity in the opening stanza. In the middle frame, a turnover on the Fuel's offensive blue line came back to bite Indy as Aces winger Josh Breton snuck home a breakaway marker at 6:54 to make it 1-0 Aces. The Fuel were quick to respond though, as veteran winger Mike Duco struck back less than two minutes later, rifling home an unassisted wrister at 8:48 to knot the game at one.
In the final period, the Fuel started quickly and never looked back as after an unassisted Rhett Bly goal delivered the Fuel the lead at 5:13, Bly's second game-winning goal in as many nights, Mathieu Brisebois' scorching power-play slapper at 6:50, assisted by Brett Perlini and Duco, extended the Fuel advantage to its final margin at 3-1.
One night removed from Sean Bonar's impressive 25-save performance in net for the Fuel, Indy goaltender Mac Carruth was stellar in victory, turning aside 31 of the 32 Aces shots he faced en route to his first victory of the preseason.
Next up for the Fuel, it's the team's lone preseason home game on "Fuel Family Fun Day," Sunday, October 12th vs. the Evansville IceMen. Tickets are on sale now for just $10 on www.indyfuelhockey.com and after the game, fans will have the opportunity to get autographs from their favorite Fuel players and skate with the team on the Coliseum ice!
