Myrtle Beach Pelicans Game Notes

June 26, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

The Pelicans hit the road for the first time in the second half as they take on the Salem Red Sox. First pitch at Salem Memorial Ballpark is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.

LHP Robbie Ross (7-2, 2.87) at RHP Ryan Pressly (4-6, 4.55)

TWO SHIPS PASSING IN THE NIGHT: May 7 was the low-point for the Pelicans. They had just lost their third straight one-run game in Salem and were four games back of the 20-7 Red Sox. The next day, Robbie Ross led the Birds to a win that sent Salem into a tailspin. From that point on, Salem has gone 11-34 (.244), squandering their lead in the standings as the Pelicans surged to a first-half title.

RISING PRINCE: Jared Prince has back-to-back three-hit games, but has been excellent over a much longer stretch. He's 12-for-27 (.444) over his six-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 17 of his last 19 games while batting .358 (29-81). One month ago today, Prince was batting .225 but he's climbed to .278 and currently ranks 11th in the league. Since his 2-for-33 start, the former Washington State Cougar has hit .312.

POTO-MAC DADDY: Barret Loux had another great start against the Nationals last night. Combining his outings from April 27 and last night at home with those on May 2 and June 14 in Potomac, Loux has allowed only three runs in 21 and two-thirds innings (1.25 ERA). In three wins and one no decision, the righty has held the P-Nats to 13 hits (5.4/9 IP) and struck out 31 (12.88/9 IP).

GIVE ME FIVE: Four Pelicans are riding hit streaks of at least five games. Jared Bolden leads the way with a eight-gamer while Jared Prince, Mitch Hilligoss and have hit safely in six consecutive games. Zach Zaneski has a five-game streak as well.

NO MORE ACE OF BASE: Ryan Strausborger went 0-for-3 in his three plate appearances last night before leaving the game in the sixth. There was no injury but his 31-game on-base streak was snapped. The run began on May 19 and was the longest in the Carolina League this year. Last night also brought his 16-game home on-base streak to an end. That is tied for the league's longest streak this year, teammate Vinny DiFazio has also gotten aboard in 16 straight at BB&T Coastal Field.
