Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Today the White Sox purchased the contract of former Winston-Salem Dash pitcher Hector Santiago from AA Birmingham and assigned him to Chicago. He replaces John Danks on the White Sox' active roster after Danks was placed on the disabled list. Santiago becomes the first 2011 Dash player to reach the big leagues and will wear uniform number 60 for the South Siders.

The left-handed pitcher from Newark, New Jersey spent parts of the last three seasons with Winston-Salem, including all of 2009 and 2010. During his professional career, Santiago was used exclusively as a relief pitcher until this season, when he was converted into a starter. This year with the Dash, Santiago went 2-3 with a 3.68 ERA in eight starts. He was promoted to the Barons last month and made six Southern League starts, going 4-2 with a 4.58 ERA.

Santiago was selected by the White Sox in the 30th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of Okaloosa-Walton Community College.

He becomes the sixth former Winston-Salem player to reach the majors since the team became nicknamed the Dash in 2009. The others are RHP Daniel Hudson (2009 Dash; 2009 - 2010 White Sox; 2010 - current Diamondbacks), RHP Sergio Santos (2009 Dash; 2010 - current White Sox), LHP Chris Sale (2010 Dash; 2010 - current White Sox), RHP Gregory Infante (2009-10 Dash; 2010 White Sox), and 3B Brent Morel (2009 Dash; 2010 - current White Sox).

Tonight the Dash begin their first home stand of the second half with the first of three games against the Lynchburg Hillcats. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark.
