Gac Blasts Dash Past Hillcats

Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - Three home runs including two eighth inning blasts lifted the Dash past the Hillcats Sunday evening. The Hillcats did not trail until the eighth when they fell behind 5-3 for good.

The leadoff batter for the Hillcats hit safely in each of the first three innings, but it took Lynchburg until the third inning to push one across home plate. Shawn McGill and Marcus Lemon singled back-to-back to start the third inning. L.V. Ware moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt before Andrelton Simmons drove in McGill with a sacrifice fly to right field. Lemon scored a batter later when Phil Gosselin reached on a two-out error by second baseman Daniel Wagner.

The Dash would come back to tie things up after falling down 2-0. A solo shot in the bottom of the third from Kyle Colligan brought Winston-Salem within one. Then in the fourth, Andy Wilkins singled home Jose Martinez to tie the game 2-2.

McGill struck again in the sixth with a two-out RBI single to put the Hillcats up 3-2.

The newly acquired 3-2 advantage looked as if it would slip away in the bottom half of the sixth after starter Chris Masters gave up back-to-back one-out singles, and reliever Andrew Wilson came in and hit the next batter to load the bases. Matt Crim came to the 'Cats rescue relieving Wilson, and inducing a ground ball to first. Joey Terdoslavich fielded and got the lead out at home. The next batter grounded out to second base, and Crim stranded the bases loaded, preserving the 3-2 lead for the time being.

Matthew Frevert entered the game in the eighth for Lynchburg, with the Hillcats still up 3-2. Frevert surrendered a leadoff homer to Tyler Saladino tying the game at 3-3. After a walk and a strikeout, Carolina League home run leader Ian Gac stepped up and belted his 19th bomb of the year over the center field wall. His blast gave the Dash their first lead of the night, 5-3 over the Hillcats.

Taylor Thompson closed the game with a scoreless ninth, recording his eighth save of the season. Brandon Kloess (2-2) tossed a perfect inning and a third of relief, finishing the seventh and pitching through the eighth to earn the win. Frevert (1-3) suffered the loss allowing three runs in the eighth inning.

The Hillcats fall to 1-3 in the second half, while the Winston-Salem Dash improve to 3-1.

The two teams meet again tomorrow night in Winston-Salem at 7:00 pm. LHP Dimasther Delgado (4-4) will take the mound for Lynchburg against RHP Andre Rienzo (1-3) for the Dash. Listen live to all the action, starting with the Hillcats On-Deck Show powered by Hona/Suzuki of Lynchburg, starting at 6:40 pm, on 105.5 KD Country and online at lynchburg-hillcats.com.
